Garno fires 71 at Spring-Ford to claim a Junior Tour victory

All systems appear go as Peter Garno gears up for his senior season at The Haverford School and the Fords’ defense of their Inter-Ac League title.
Garno didn’t seem to be bothered by Monday’s withering heat as he made birdies on the second, eighth and 18th holes in registering a sparkling 1-under-par 71 to take the top spot in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Spring-Ford Country Club.
Jack Cooley of Chadds Ford was a close second, carding a solid 1-over 73 over the 6,593-yard, par-72 Spring-Ford layout. Dylan Gooneratne, a District One Class AAA qualifier as a freshman at Plymouth-Whitemarsh last fall, and Benjamin Lee of Malvern shared third place, each posting a 79.
Andrew Koh of Dresher was alone in fifth with an 80. A shot behind Koh there was a three-way logjam for sixth place at 81 among Luke Beggy of Philadelphia, Ryan Kennedy of Wayne and Nick Martin of Audubon.
Rounding out the top 10 was a three-way tie for ninth among Conrad Benford of Parker Ford, Axel Kalbach of Royersford and George Wicks IV of Phoenixville, each posting an 84.
Devon Prep sophomore Ryan McCabe, the reigning District One Class AA champion, continued his strong summer on the links by making four birdies in capturing top honors in the 13-to-15 division with a 3-over 75.
Luke Watson of Royersford was the runnerup to McCabe with a solid 77 and Kyle Resuta took third with an 80. Liam Buckley of Media and Andrew Lauerman of North Wales shared fourth place, each carding an 81 and Stephen Butler of Telford and Patrick Traynor of Villanova finished in a tie for sixth at 83.
Malvern Prep sophomore Jack Fialko finished eighth with an 84, Ryan Garvey of Media was ninth with an 85 and Blake Stewart of Perkasie rounded out the top 10, taking 10th with an 89.
Alyson Rentschler of Hamburg was the lone competitor in the girls 16-to-18 division and her 93 included pars at the second, 10th and 17th holes.
Serena Bagga of Blue Bell fired an 83 to take the top spot in the 13-to-15 division, her first Junior Tour victory this year. Lauren Jones, who helped Episcopal Academy win the Inter-Ac League title as a freshman this spring, was the runnerup with a solid 86.
Ava Lichok of Downingtown finished third with a 102 and Bethany Julias of Schwenksville was fourth with a 111.
George Deming of Philadelphia rattled off four straight pars at 12, 13, 14 and 15 on his way to a 9-over 45 that bested the field of nine-holers. Ethan Martin of North Wales was a shot behind Deming in second with a 46.
Ajeet Bagga of Blue Bell’s Team Bagga, Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting’s Team Gooneratne and Kate Roberts and Kayley Roberts of Phoenixville’s Team Roberts finished tied for third as all four landed on 49.
Another member of Blue Bell’s Team Bagga, Kiran Bagga, was seventh with a 54 and Jillian Kloc of Mohnton was eighth with a 67.
The Spring-Ford stop also included men’s and women’s divisions and Thomas Schaffer of Collegeville won the men’s 17-to-24 division with an 85. Benjamin Sheard of Elizabethtown was the  runnerup with a 93.
Emily McGarrigle won the battle of Wernersville’s Team McGarrigle for the top spot in the women’s 17-to-24 division as her 90 was four shots better than Elaina McGarrigle’s 94. It was Emily McGarrigle’s second Junior Tour win of the year.
