Michael Festa of Ambler took top honors in the 16-to-18
division in a match of scorecards with Cole Shew of West Chester after each
carded a 4-over-par 74 Sunday in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at
Mainland Golf Course in Harleysville.
While not quite as bitterly cold as it was for Saturday’s
Junior Tour stop at Foxchase Golf Club, the cold-weather gear was still very
much in order at Mainland. Festa’s back nine of 1-over 36 proved to be decisive
in giving him the nod over Shew.
A couple of Wilmington, Del. entries, Nikita Romanov and
Nathan Potts and Will Hage of Phoenixville shared third place, each carding a
7-over 77 over the 6,146-yard, par-70 Mainland layout. Jack Hamilton of West
Chester and Stephen Lorenzo of Lower Gwynedd finished tied for sixth at 79.
Thomas Butler of Telford finished eighth with an 80, Evan
Drummond of Exton was ninth with an 81 and Conrad Benford of Parker Ford
rounded out the top 10 with an 82.
Zachary Sandler of Gladwyne claimed the top spot in the
13-to-15 division with a 5-over 75. Sandler birdied the fifth and made eight
pars in a sparkling front nine of 1-under 34. Stephen Butler, another of the
Telford Butlers, made an eagle on the par-4 10th hole on his way to
runnerup honors with a 79.
Darren Nolan of Glenside finished third with an 82, Kevin
Motil of Sewell, N.J. was fourth with an 83, Luke Corcoran of Lansdale was
fifth with an 84 and Winston Kelenc-Blank of Rumson, N.J. was sixth with an 85.
Jerry Lu of Plainsboro, N.J. took seventh with an 87, Kevin
Deng of Devon was eighth with a 90, Ryan Garvey of Media was ninth with a 93
and Quinn Marett of Lansale rounded out the top 10 with a 95.
Christina Carroll of Bear, Del. had six pars on the front
nine on her way to an 85 that gave her the victory in the girls 16-to-18
division. Helen Shaw of Harleysville was the runnerup with a 95 and Katie
Pupillo of Skippack was third with a 107.
Jade Gu of Yardley led a strong group of 13-to-15 division
competitors with a 5-over 75 that included back-to-back birdies at the 12th
and 13th holes. Gu, who plays at Pennsbury, came up just short of a
trip to the PIAA Class AAA East Regional when she lost in a playoff for the
last regional berth at the District One Championship at Turtle Creek Golf Club.
Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood and Katherine Lu, another of the
Plainsboro, N.J. Lus, shared second place, each carding a 76.
A couple of Lu girls from Edison, N.J., Grace and Claire,
accounted for two of the next three spots as Grace took fourth with an 80 and
Claire was sixth with an 86. In between them in fifth was Megan Adelman of Bryn
Mawr, who matched the 83 she shot in Saturday’s brutal conditions at Foxchase.
Nicole Yun of Limerick finished seventh with an 87 and
Kathryn Kovatch of Gilbertsville was eighth with a 117.
Hank Kancher of Philadelphia birdied the first hole on his
way to a 6-over 41 that left him atop the field of nine-holers. Michael
Maslanka of Taylor and Daniel Shin of Horsham shared second place, each carding
a 42.
Nicholas Gross of Downingtown finished fourth with a 43,
Tyler Fortney of Fayetteville was fifth with a 44 and Ethan Martin of North
Wales was sixth with a 46.
Aaron Combs of Basking Ridge, N.J. finished seventh with a
50 and Stefania Fedun of Glenmoore and Aiden Scott of Harleysville ended up
tied for eighth at 51.
