They bonded as the guys you often see staring at the
scoreboard at Golf Association of Philadelphia major championships, wondering
if that missed four-footer for par on 16 was going to doom them to one of those
messy 8-for-2 playoffs for the last berth in match play or in a qualifier.
But there was no such angst in the GAP Four-Man Team
Championship Thursday as Jason Barkley of Moselem Springs Golf Club, Mark
Coassolo of Brookside Country Club of Allentown, Shawn Lavin of Rolling Green
Golf Club and Peter Moran of Whitford Country Club came together to post a
two-best-balls-of-four total of 9-under-par 133 at Penn Oaks Golf Club to claim
a two-shot victory.
They are 40-somethings from all over the southeastern
Pennsylvania map, Barkley from Kutztown, Coassolo from Macungie, Lavin from
Drexel Hill and Moran from Chester Springs, but they proved to be the perfect
four-man team. The formula, as Moran explained it, is pretty simple.
“Making sure you get a group of guys that you like together
is most important out here,” Moran told the GAP website.
Moran had the best day, making six birdies over the
6,190-yard, par-71 Penn Oaks layout, including a near ace at the 149-yard 15th
hole. But everybody on the team had a hand in this victory.
Barkley, Coassolo, Lavin and Moran finished two shots ahead
of the defending champions, a foursome from Riverton Country Club that included
David Gall, Kevin Kramarski, Ben Litt and Phillip Villari Jr., who posted a
7-uneder 135 total.
Stephen Barry of Sakima Country Club, Ryan Cass of
Merchantville Country Club and the Running Deer Golf Club pair of Jacob Hanzel
and Chris Meares formed the third-place team, which put up a 4-under 138 total.
Doug Fedoryshyn may have left Concord Country Club for
Applebrook Golf Club, but he teamed up with three of his old Concord buddies,
Larry Benedetto, Nick Gazonas and Joseph Jachetti to finish fourth at 3-under 139.
The Rolling Green quartet of Craig Aronchick, Robert
Billings, Jack Helms and Nick Verrecchio matched par at 142 to take fifth.
Sixth place went to Donald Kozik of McCall Golf &
Country Club, Kevin Quimby of Moselem Springs and two guys from the host course
of Penn Oaks, Brian Hamilton and Todd Price, who carded a 1-over 143.
Two teams finished tied for seventh at 2-over 144.
One of those teams was comprised of Brad Comforth of Loch
Nairn Golf Club, Dan Smith of Running Deer and the Inniscrone Golf Club pair of
Joe Spitaleri and Jian Zhang. The other foursome included Brintan Madonna of
Lancaster Country Club, Jared Texter of Conestoga Country Club and Woodstone
Country Club pair of Shawn Hughes and Nicholas Lukow.
Michael Manci of Huntsville Golf Club and the Glen Oak
Country Club trio of Michael Kerzetski, David Maddock and Frank Petrillo
finished ninth at 3-over 145.
Rounding out the top 10 was the foursome of Wes Kerr of
Hidden Creek Country Club and the Tavistock Country Club trio of Stephen Bender,
Brett Mower and Michael Sieck, who teamed up for a 4-over 146 total.
