Winter got off to a slow start in December, so it just
wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to quit on its last official day Saturday
as the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour kicked off the 2016 season with a
stop at The Vineyards in Egg Harbor City, N.J.
Temperatures struggled to reach 40 degrees on the eve of
spring. I can vouch for the chill in the air as your humble blogger returned to
the caddy ranks for the first time in 36 years with a stroll around Stonewall
(one bag for nine holes and two for the back nine), the Tom Doak-designed gem
in northwest Chester County that will play host to the U.S. Mid-Amateur
Championship in September.
But the weather didn’t seem to bother William Mitchell of
Moorestown, N.J. The Philadelphia Junior Tour Player of the Year in 2015 picked
up right where he left off last year, firing a 1-under par 71 to take top
honors in the 16-to-18 division.
Mitchell finished four shots clear of Andrew Gallagher of
Mount Laurel, N.J. and Benjamin Sheard of Elizabethtown, both of whom carded
3-over 75. Liam Ward of Malvern finished fourth with a 78. Upper Darby senior
Michael Wolf finished 10th with an 83.
Dave Nicholas of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. was equally
unfazed by the tough conditions as he matched par with a 72 to finish atop the
13-to-15 division. Akhil Giri of Moorestown, N.J. finished second with a 74 and
Ryan D’Ariano of West Chester and Andrew Wallace of Narberth shared third place
at 4-over 76.
Esther Park of Wilmington, Del. bested the girls 16-to-18
field with a solid 76. Camille O’Halloran
of Northfield, N.J. finished second with an 80 and Natalie Jacobs of West
Chester grabbed third place with a 92.
Katherine Lu of Plainsboro, N.J. won the 13-to-15 division
with an 81. Paige Cerminaro of Farmingdale, N.J. was the runnerup with an 88.
Kathleen Mark of Media finished eighth with a 99.
Among the nine-holers, Adrian Jordan of Lawrenceville, N.J.
topped the field with a 40, four shots clear of runnerup Nicholas Gross of
Downingtown, who posted a 44.
