Vance, Sager are winners at Turtle Creek

Kyle Vance, the District One Class AAA champion as a freshman at Methacton last fall, and Maddie Sager, the Owen J. Roberts junior who was a PIAA Class AAA medalist last fall, took top honors in a Philadelphia PGA Junior Elite Tour event held at Turtle Creek Golf Club.
There were weather delays Wednesday that required some players to come back Thursday to complete their first rounds, but the 36-hole event was completed.
The elite events lump all the age groups into one and despite being one of the younger competitors in a 13-to-18 division, Vance, with rounds of 73 and 71, carded an even-par 144 to finish a shot ahead of Tom Fisher (74-71) of Horsham among the boys.
Jack Hirsh (76-80) of Villanova finished in a tie for 22nd at 156, Jacob Liberman (82-76) of Radnor and Jake Calamaro (78-80) of Newtown Square finished in a tie for 28th at 158 and Michael Sydnes (80-81) of Bryn Mawr finished in a tie for 37th at 161.
Sager topped the girls field with rounds of 75 and 74 for a 149 total that was three shots better than runnerup Christine Shao of Green Brook, N.J., who had rounds of 73 and 79 for a 152 total.
Agnes Irwin freshman Kaitlyn Lees (coming off a runnerup finish in the Pennsylvania Junior Girls Championship, details of which appear in Tom McNichol’s Golf Notebook in the Saturday 7-5 print edition of the Daily Times), finished in a tie for fifth with a pair of 79s for a 158 total.
Chichester sophomore Caprian Kan (79-81) finished seventh at 160, Garnet Valley senior Annika Vandayar (81-80), who also had a strong showing at the Pennsylvania Junior Girls, finished eighth at 161, and Radnor sophomore Gabby Kim (85-79) finished in a tie for 10th at 164.

Miller gets a first at Wyncote

The Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour stopped at challenging Wyncote Golf Club Monday and recent Springfield graduate Samantha Miller took top honors in the 16-to-18 division with a 92, a shot better than the 93 posted by Emily Gilbert of Gilbertsville.
John Updike of Wayne finished second in the 13-to-15 age group with a sparkling 74 over the links-like 6,509-yard, par-72 Wyncote layout. He was three shots back of division winner Jack Mitchell of Moorestown, N.J., who had a 71.
Aronimink Golf Club’s Billy Civitella finished in a tie for fifth in the division with an 81.
Alejandro Velez of Harleysville topped the 16-to-18 division with a 75. Jack Hirsh of Villanova finished in a tie for sixth with an 81.
Elise Glauser of Newark, Del., won the 16-to-18 girls division with a 98. Anne Curran of Villanova was the runnerup at 110.
Jacob Zeng of Downingtown bested the field of nine-holers with a 42. June Kim of Wayne finished third with a 46, Kevin Civitella of Berwyn finished fifth with a 48, Jackson Fields of Glen Mills finished sixth with a 49 and Daniel Curran of Villanova finished 11th with a 66.

Wayne’s John Updike continued his solid play this summer with a runnerup finish in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour stop Wednesday at Blue Bell Country Club.
Updike carded a 2-over 73 over the 6,483-yard, par-71 Blue Bell layout to finish a shot back of Matthew Graeff of Blue Bell, who birdied the last three holes for a 1-over 72.
Also in the division, Daniel Bullock of Wayne finished 14th with an 86, Andrew Curran of Media finished in a tie for 16th with an 89, Lucas Zhu finished 23rd with a 97 and Matthew Barkann finished 25th with a 104.
Erik Reisner, the Central League champion at Harriton last fall, topped the 16-to-18 division with a 75. Luke Nichols of Bryn Mawr finished in a tie for fifth with an 82 and Minwoo Kwak of Bryn Mawr finished 18th with a 93.
