Manning, Reese earn top prizes in Harry Hammond Scholarship essay contest

Downingtown West junior Brady Manning and Council Rock South junior Audrey Reese submitted the winning essays and earned the top Harry Hammond Scholarship prizes.

Manning and Reese, each of whom teed it up in the District One Class AAA Championship this fall, played in the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s annual Harry Hammond Invitational in August at Penn Oaks Golf Club.

Hammond is the director of golf at Penn Oaks and nobody in this area has done more to support junior golf than Hammond has. A Master Professional, Hammond is a former Philadelphia Section Junior Golf Chairman and has been a Junior Golf Leader on both the local and national levels. He has won every national award the PGA of America hands out. Oh yeah, and in his spare time, Hammond is the head coach of the men’s and women’s golf teams at West Chester University.

The annual Junior Tour event at Penn Oaks is open to players who finished first or second in any age group in a Junior Tour event in the past year.

Players who tee it up in the Harry Hammond Invitational are invited to submit an essay on any subject and the winners are chosen by the Philadelphia Section PGA’s Junior Golf Committee.

Manning, a second-team All-Ches-Mont selection, and Reese earned the top prizes of $750 each for their winning essays.

Manning earned a trip to the District One Championship by finishing in a tie for 15th place in the Ches-Mont League Championship at Applecross Country Club this fall.

Luke Turse of Hainesport, N.J. was the runnerup in the boys essay competition and earned a $500 scholarship. Sean Kelly of Lewisburg finished in third place and earned a $250 scholarship.

Reese and Hayley Ekert, a junior at North Penn and the runnerup in the girls Harry Hammond Scholarship competition, both advanced to the District One Championship out of the Suburban One League Championship at Five Ponds Golf Club.

Ekert reached the second day at districts with a sparkling even-par 71 in the opening round at Raven’s Claw Golf Club, but came up short in her bid to reach the PIAA Class AAA Championship. Ekert earned a $500 scholarship in the Harry Hammond Scholarship essay competition.
