Lynch claims a Junior Tour victory with a 73 at Bensalem Township

Thomas Lynch of Dunmore birdied the first hole and the last hole and made 12 pars in between as he carded a 3-over-par 73 to finish atop the 16-to-18 division and capture a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour victory Saturday at the Bensalem Township Country Club.

Lynch was even-par with a 35 on the outgoing nine at the par-70 Bensalem Township layout.

Liberty sophomore Matt Vital, coming off a course-record 8-under 62 that earned him a victory in a Junior Tour stop at Reading Country Club, was the runnerup with a 5-over 75 that included back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth holes and two more birdies on the incoming nine at 15 and 17. Matt Vital also had nine pars on his scorecard.

Matt Vital was the subject of a nice feature story by veteran Philadelphia Inquirer golf writer Joe Juliano in Saturday’s print edition (it was online a couple of days earlier) on his spectacular round last week at Reading, which broke the competitive course record of 63 set in 1949 by one of the legends of the game, Sam Snead.

Charlie Kerpick of Dresher and Michael Lynch III of Dunmore’s Team Lynch (Michael and Thomas are both Class of 2022 entries, so a possible twin situation) finished in a tie for third place, each landing on 7-over 77.

Kerpick, like Matt Vital, went back-to-back with birdies at the fifth and sixth holes and had two more birdies on eight and 12. Michael Lynch III went back-to-back with birdies at the fourth and fifth holes, had another birdie at 12 and had nine pars on his scorecard.

Noah Keener finished alone in fifth place with a 78, Downingtown East senior Dylan Gute was sixth with a 79, Christopher DiRita of Drexel Hill was seventh with an 80 and Spring-Ford sophomore Jake Blackmore was eighth with an 84.

Evan Goldberg of Linwood, N.J. took ninth place with an 85 and Luke Turse of Hainesport, N.J. and Matthew Storero of Lower Gwynedd rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as each signed for an 88 to finish in a tie for 10th place.

Matt Vital’s twin brother Michael Vital couldn’t quite capture low-Vital honors, but with a birdie at the first hole and eight pars on his scorecard, he did claim the top spot in the 13-to-15 division with a 9-over 79.

Travis Robertson of Fort Washington had a steady round that featured 10 pars, including pars on seven of the last eight holes on his way to an 80 that left him a shot behind Michael Vital in second place with an 80. Charlie Ferrise of Phoenixville birdied the second hole and had seven pars as he finished alone in third place with an 84.

Sean Curran of Newtown Square took fourth place with a 91, Drew Soltys of Warrington was fifth with a 92 and James Schramek of Chalfont was sixth with a 93.

Brady Gallagher of Quakertown and David Fiorita of Jamison shared seventh place, each posting a 94, Gavin Siravo of Wyomissing was ninth with a 96 and Jacob Reibstein of Huntingdon Valley rounded out the top 10 among the younger guys as he finished alone in 10th with a 97.

Mount St. Joseph senior Clare Gimpel, who capped an outstanding scholastic career by finishing in a tie for seventh place in last fall’s PIAA Class AAA Championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort, had birdies at the first and seventh holes and had eight pars on her scorecard as she earned a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with an 8-over 78.

Phoenixville freshman Kate Roberts went 3-under for a stretch of  five holes as she made birdies at the first and third holes and, after a bogey at the fourth hole, eagled the par-4 fifth hole. Roberts, a District One Class AAA qualifier for the Phantoms last fall, went on to register an 80 to finish two shots behind Gimpel in second place.

Silvana Gonzalez of Exton had a birdie on the third hole and made five pars as she finished alone in third place with an 84. West Chester Rustin senior Mary Emma Guldi, also a district qualifier last fall, took fourth place with a 92.

Skye Mada of Cherry Hill, N.J. took fifth place with a 98, Nina Harris of Furlong was sixth with a 102, Leah Armour of Doylestown was seventh with a 109 and Ella Miller of Lumberton, N.J. rounded out the 16-to-18 field as she ended up in eighth place with a 111.

Season Wei of Warren, N.J. had eight pars, including three straight on the first, second and third holes, as she prevailed in a tight contest in the 13-to-15 division with an 83.

Kayley Roberts, another member of Phoenixville’s Team Roberts, birdied the 11th hole and made six pars as she finished two shots behind Wei in second place with an 85. Clarissa Leung of Villanova birdied the second hole and made eight pars as she finished a shot behind Kayley Roberts in third place with an 86.

Geneva Merino of York took fourth place with a 97, Elora Walker of Philadelphia was fifth with a 103, Alison Adams of Phoenixville was sixth with a 104 and Casey Baltzer of Langhorne rounded out the 13-to-15 field as she finished seventh with a 119.

Sebastian Price of Lansdale and David Nissen of Lower Gwynedd each signed for a 5-over 40 as they shared medalist honors among the nine-holers. Price and Nissen made matching birdies on the eighth hole while Price had three pars and Nissen four pars.

Jason Mack of Delaware Water Gap and Holden Sparks of Nazareth shared third place, each posting a 7-over 42 to finish two shots behind the top two. Mack had a string of five straight pars on his scorecard from the fourth through the eighth holes. Sparks made a birdie at the fifth hole and had three pars.

Jack Luterman of Ardmore and Benjamin Robbins of Holland finished in a tie for fifth place, each carding a 43, and Wyatt Underwood of Telford and Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth each landed on 45 to end up in a tie for seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division were three players, Justin Stickel of Churchville, Onyu Park of Blue Bell and Jackson Lane of Cinnaminson, N.J., all of whom registered a 47 to finish in a tie for ninth place.
