Chang takes individual crown, leads Princeton to team title in Harvard Invitational

Annabelle Chang, a sophomore from Walnut, Calif., captured the individual title and led two-time reigning Ivy League champion Princeton to the team crown in the Harvard Invitational, which concluded Sunday at the Orange County National Golf Center’s Crooked Cat Course in Winter Garden, Fla.
Agnes Irwin product Kaitlyn Lees, a three-time winner of the Pennsylvania Junior Girls’ Championship, continued her solid freshman campaign at Dartmouth as she shared team medalist honors for the Big Green with Catharine Roddy, a senior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., as both finished among the group tied for 12th place in the individual standings at 9-over-par 225.
Chang carded a pair of 1-under 71s over the 6,163-yard, par-72 Crooked Cat Course layout in Saturday’s double-round and trailed teammate Maya Walton, a junior from Austin, Texas, and Penn’s Christina Park, a junior from San Diego, by three shots in the individual standings.
But Chang, a second-place finisher in last spring’s Ivy League Championship, again bettered par with a 2-under 70 in the final round for a 4-under 212 total that was one shot better than Walton and Park and gave Chang the individual crown.
Chang and Walton, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, led the way as Princeton opened with a 4-over 292 and added a 5-over 293 in Saturday’s double-round before finishing up with a 7-over 295 that left the Tigers with a 16-over 880 total.
Park’s solid showing helped Penn get a share of second place with host Harvard at 27-over 891. After opening with a 299, the Quakers posted the best team round of the tournament, a 1-over 289, in Saturday afternoon’s second round before closing with a 303. The 289 in the second round bested the program’s previous record team round by four shots and the Quakers’ 588 total at the end of Saturday’s double-round bettered the previous program mark for 36 holes by a shot.
The Crimson shaved 12 shots off their opening-round 304 with a solid 4-over 292 in the second round before closing with a 7-over 295, matching Princeton for the low team round Sunday.
Lees and Roddy led Dartmouth to a tie for fourth in the eight-team field with Navy at 45-over 909, 18 shots behind Penn and Harvard.
Dartmouth opened with a 300 and added a 302 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before finishing up with a 307. Navy improved by 10 shots from its opening-round 309 with a second-round 299 before closing with a 301.
Walton had earned a share of the lead after Saturday’s double-round with a 1-under 71 and a 4-under 68 before falling back a little in the final round with a 2-over 74 that left her in a tie for second behind her teammate Chang at 3-under 213.
Sophie Siminoff, a freshman from Los Altos Hills, Calif., gave Princeton a third finisher in the top six as she ended up among a trio of players tied for sixth at 6-over 222. Siminoff improved by a shot in each round as she opened with a 75 and added a 74 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before closing with a solid 1-over 73.
Emma Zhou, a freshman from Windermere, Fla., saved her best for last, carding a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish in the group tied for 14th at 10-over 226. Rounding out the Princeton lineup was Tiana Lau, a senior from Hong Kong who finished among the group tied for 35th at 239 after adding a final-round 78 to the pair of 80s she posted in Saturday’s double-round.
Penn’s Park equaled the program record for a single round with the 4-under 68 she carded in the second round that gave her a share of the lead with Princeton’s Walton. Park’s 139 total after two rounds was also a Penn record. She closed with a 2-over 74 to share second with Walton at 3-under 213.
Yale freshman Ami Gianchandani, a product of The Pingry School who reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo., closed with the best round of the day in Sunday’s final round, a 3-under 69 that left her alone in fourth place at 2-under 214.
Harvard's Elizabeth Wang, a freshman from San Marino, Calif., led the Crimson as she finished alone in fifth place at even-par 216. Wang, who reached the round of 16 in last summer's U.S. Women's Amateur at The Golf Club of Tennessee, sandwiched a 2-under 70 in Saturday afternoon's second round with a pair of 1-over 73s.
Joining Princeton’s Siminoff in the trio tied for sixth at 222 were Penn’s Leila Dizon, a freshman from Los Angeles, and Harvard’s Anna Zhou, a sophomore from Palo Alto, Calif. Dizon had a solid opening day with rounds of 74 and 72 in Saturday’s double-round before closing with a 4-over 76. After opening with a 77, Zhou matched par with a 72 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before closing with a solid 1-over 73.
Backing up Park and Dizon for Penn was Mary Shin, a freshman from Irvine, Calif. who finished among the group tied for 14th at 226. Shin opened with a 78 and added a 1-over 73 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before closing with a 75.
Rina Jung, a sophomore from Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., finished in the group tied for 25th at 230 as she added a 78 in the final round to the pair of 76s she posted in Saturday’s double-round.
Rounding out the Penn lineup was freshman Olivia Traynor, who captured the Inter-Ac League’s individual title as a freshman at Notre Dame in 2015. Traynor finished alone in 39th at 243 as she opened with an 82 and added a 78 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before closing with an 83.
Lees, a three-time Inter-Ac champion at Agnes Irwin, and Roddy matched scores throughout the weekend in leading the way for Dartmouth. Lees, who plays out of Philadelphia Country Club and Merion Golf Club, and Roddy each opened with a 76 before adding their best round of the tournament, a 1-over 73 in Saturday afternoon’s second round before each closed with a 76 to land at 9-over 225 in the group tied for 12th.
Moon Cheong, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., gave Dartmouth a third 4-over 76 in the final round as she shared medalist honors for Dartmouth for the day with Lees and Roddy. Cheong had opened with a 75 and added a 78 in Saturday’s second round and her final-round 76 left her in the group tied for 21st at 229.
Kristen Soh, a junior from Los Angeles, finished among the group tied for 25th at 230 as she opened with a solid 1-over 73 before adding a 78 in Saturday afternoon’s second round and closing with a 79. Rounding out the Dartmouth lineup was Kristen Chen, a freshman from Thousand Oaks, Calif. who finished in the group tied for 33rd at 238 after a final-round 80.

   Frazier closed with a 1-over 73 after posting a pair of 77s in Saturday’s double-round and McDonnell added a 1-over 73 in Saturday’s second round to an opening-round 76 before finishing up with a 78.
