Villanova's Daly claims individual title in Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship, helps Wildcats finish second

Villanova’s top player, Connor Daly, a junior from Bronxville, N.Y., carded a 2-over-par 142 over two days to capture individual honors in the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship, which wrapped up Monday at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J.
Daly opened with a 1-over 71 over the 6,503-yard, par-70 Montclair layout Sunday and matched that total in Monday’s second round to edge St. Peter’s David Powers, a junior from Glen Spey, N.Y., by a shot. Powers had matched par with a 70 in the opening round before carding a 3-over 73 for a 3-over 143 total.
Powers and St. Peter’s dominated the opening round in the team chase, carding a 3-over 283 that left them with a seven-shot lead over Long Island University Brooklyn. Villanova struggled to a 298 in the opening round and trailed the Peacocks by 15 shots.
The Wildcats were a shot worse in Monday’s second round at 299, but the Montclair layout played tough and their 37-over 597 total earned them a runnerup finish to St. Peter’s in the team standings. The Peacocks slipped to a 300 in the second round, but their 23-over 583 total was still 14 shots clear of Villanova.
Iona had the best team round in Monday’s windup, a 15-over 295, to finish third, a shot behind the Wildcats at 38-over 598. St. John’s added a 311 to a solid opening-round 292 to finish fourth at 603. LIU Brooklyn slipped back after its opening-round 290 with a 314 to finish fifth at 604.
Fairfield was two shots behind LIU Brooklyn in sixth at 606 after a final-round 311 and Monmouth took seventh in the 15-team field at 607 after a final-round 309.
Backing up Powers for St. Peter’s was Jeffrey Peters, a sophomore from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. who was two shots behind his teammate in a tie for third at 5-over 145. Peters had opened with the low round Sunday, a sparkling 2-under 68, but backed off in Monday’s second round with a 77.
Melvin Morales, a freshman from Puerto Rico, finished among the group tied for 11th at 149 after a final round of 4-over 74. Jose Cardona, a senior from Puerto Rico, ended up in the group tied for 24th at 152 after a second straight 76.
Mike Winter, a senior from Hamilton Square, N.J., rounded out the lineup for the Peacocks as he finished in the group tied for 31st at 153. Winter was among the leaders after matching par in the opening round with a 70 before falling back with an 83 in Monday’s final round.
Joining St. Peter’s Peters in a tie for third at 145 was St. John’s Austin Briggs, a senior from San Clemente, Calif. who added a 75 to his opening-round 70.
Mark Benevento, a redshirt junior from Ocean City, N.J., gave Villanova a second player in the top five as he headed a group of three players tied for fifth at 147. Benevento carded a 3-over 73 in the second round after opening with a 74.
Joining Benevento at 147 were Iona’s Paolo Matti, a senior from Union, N.J., and Fairfield’s James Tyer, a freshman from Stoughton, Mass. Matti added a 2-over 72 to her opening-round 75. Tyer was one shot out of the lead after an opening round of 1-under 69 before backing off with a 78 in Monday’s second round.
Backing up Daly and Benevento for Villanova was Jack O’Hara, a freshman from Loudonville, N.Y. who finished in the group tied for 24th at 152 with a pair of 76s. Reb Banas, a sophomore from Winnetka, Ill., finished in the group tied for 45th at 156 after adding a 79 to his opening-round 77.
