Pillar fires 67 to claim Junior Tour victory at Penn State; Fedor the JGS series winner

Alex Pillar, the son of John Pillar, the director of golf at the Country Club at Woodloch Springs in Hawley, had the best round of the weekend, a 5-under-par 67, to win the top honors in the 16-to-18 division on Day 2 of a Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) Golf Pride State College Series weekend Sunday at Penn State’s Blue Course.
Pillar made five birdies with nary a bogey on the card over the 6,473-yard, par-72 Blue Course. He finished three shots clear of runnerup Shaun Fedor of Lancaster, who checked in with a solid 2-under 70.
That gave Fedor the series victory as the 70, combined with the even-par 72 he shot Saturday, gave him a 2-under 142 total. Series winners received a set of grips, courtesy of Golf Pride, which sponsored the weekend JGS event.
Troy Kelleher of Clarks Summit also bettered par Sunday with a 1-under 71 that enabled him to finish third. Pillar, who opened with a 77 Saturday, and Kelleher, who had a 73 Saturday, shared second for the series at even-par 144, two shots behind Fedor.
Shane Angle of Mountain Top carded a 1-over 73 Sunday to finish fourth and Daniel Flickinger of Clarks Summit took fifth with a 77. Three players – Bryan Donato of Chester Springs, Stephane de Brechard of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Tyler Wassell of Lancaster – shared sixth place, each carding a 78.
Rounding out the top 10 were three players tied for ninth at 79, including Nathan Pierce of Limerick, Ryan Kennedy of Wayne and Lake Lehman sophomore Bobby Lugiano, a PIAA Class AA East Regional qualifier last fall.
Angle (76-73) finished fourth for the series at 149, five shots behind Kelleher and Pillar. Kennedy (76-79) was fifth at 155, Lugiano (78-79) was sixth at 157 and Pierce (80-79) and de Brechard (81-78) shared seventh place at 159.
Jolo Timothy Magcalayo of the Philippines found the Blue Course to his liking as he fired a second consecutive 4-under 68 to capture the 13-to-15 division and breeze to the victory for the two-day series.
Adrian Jordan of Lawrenceville, N.J. was the runnerup with a 1-over 73. Garnet Valley sophomore Jaocb Sokalsky and James Ulsh of Carlisle shared third place, each carding a solid 2-over 74. Roy Anderson of Chadds Ford finished fifth with a 75, Luke Thompson of Palmyra was sixth with a 78 and Owen Fahs of Nazareth was seventh with a 79.
John Olsen of Boalsburg finished eighth with an 80 and Trevor Snyder of Dover was ninth with an 81. Rounding out the top 10 were three players tied for 10th, each posting an 82, including Spring-Ford freshman Luke Watson, Julien de Brechchard of Brooklyn’s Team de Brechard, and James Flickinger of Clarks Summit’s Team Flickinger.
Jordan’s 73 Sunday, combined with the 79 he posted Saturday, left him as the runnerup in the series, 16 shots behind Magcalayo at 152. Ulsh (79-74) was another shot back in third at 153, Anderson (79-75) was fourth at 154, Sokalsky (81-74) was fifth at 155 and Watson (75-82) was sixth at 157.
Jona Angela Magcalayo made it another big weekend for Team Magcalayo of the Philippines on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour as she captured the girls 16-to-18 division with a 3-over 75. Christina Carroll of Bear, Del. was the runnerup with a 77.
It was the second consecutive 77 for Carroll, which gave her a one-shot edge over Magcalayo in the battle for the series title with a 154 total. Magcalayo opened with an 80 Saturday for a 155 total.
Morgan Sohosky of Bloomsburg finished third Sunday with a 78 and Mount St. Joseph sophomore Olivia Wirsching, who helped the Mount claim the District One Class AAA team championship last fall, was fourth with an 80, Alexandra Voight-Shelley of State College was fifth with an 81 and Morin Dremock of Drums took sixth with an 86.
Jessica McClellan of Freeland finished seventh with an 89, Sara Hall of Mountain Top was eighth with a 94, Kaylie Richards of State College was ninth with a 97, Anna McCormick of Harrisburg was 10th with a 98, and Abigail Han of Hummelstown was 11th with a 102.
Voight-Shelley, with her second straight 81, and Wirsching, who opened with an 82 Saturday, shared third place in the series at 162, seven shots behind runnerup Magcalayo. Sohosky (89-78) finished fifth at 167.
Ava O’Sullivan of Exton completed a weekend sweep of the 13-to-15 division as she captured top honors Sunday with an 85. Combined with her 82 Saturday, O’Sullivan cruised to the series victory with a 167 total. The two weekend wins gives O’Sullivan three Junior Tour victories in the wraparound 2017-’18 season.
Gwendolyn Powell of Madison Township was the runnerup with a 98. Powell was also the series runnerup as her 98, combined with the 104 she shot Saturday, gave her a 202 total.
Michael Maslanka of Taylor prevailed in a scorecard playoff after finishing tied for the top spot among the nine-holers with Nicholas Gross of Downingtown and John Keba of Emmaus at 1-over 37.
The division was highly competitive all weekend. Maslanka’s birdie on the par-5 fifth hole ultimately gave him the edge over Keba in the tiebreaker.
Gross, however, finished one shot ahead of Maslanka and Kleba for the series victory. Gross won the nine-hole division Saturday with a 37 and a second straight 37 gave him a 74 total, one shot better than Maslanka and Keba, both of whom went 38-37 over the weekend.
Tyler Fortney finished fourth with a 38, a shot behind the top three. Combined with his 42 Saturday, Fortney finished fourth in the series at 80.
Mason Tucker of York was fifth Sunday with a 41, Evan Gross of Downingtown’s Team Gross, was sixth with a 42, Isaak Bloom of Bellefonte was seventh with a 45 and Elora Walker of Philadelphia was eighth with a 50.
Lauren Molin of Doylestown was, for the second straight day, the lone entry in the women’s 17-to-24 division, which made its season debut this weekend. Molin improved eight shots from the 89 she shot Saturday with an 81 Sunday.
