Dornes fires 62 at Moselem Springs to take lead at Pennsylvania Amateur

   J.D. Dornes, a recent Penn State graduate, fired a brilliant 8-under 62 at Moselem Springs Golf Club Monday to take a four-shot lead at the weather-delayed Pennsylvania Amateur Championship presented by Allegheny Health Network.

   A thunderstorm descended on Berks County at 5:50 p.m. with several players still on the course. They will return Tuesday morning to complete the first round with the second round to follow. There’s a cut following the second round with the third round scheduled for Wednesday.

   After making birdies at two and four, Dornes, the former Manheim Township standout who helped the Nittany Lions reach the NCAA regional at Blackwolf Run, eagled the par-5 seventh and then made another eagle at the par-4 ninth hole to make the turn at 6-under 29. He added birdies at the 12^th and 13^th holes for his 8-under total.

   Christopher Crawford, the former Drexel standout who plays out of Spring Mill Country Club, heads a group at 4-under after firing a 66. Jarred Texter, a Pennsylvania Golf Association individual member, matched Crawford’s 66. Zachay Ford of Wanango Country Club is at 4-under through 13 holes of his opening round.

   Georgetown junior Cole Berman, who led the Hoyas to the NCAA regional at the Vanderbilt Legends Course, and Scott McLaughlin of LuLu Country Club are tied for fifth at 3-under after carding 67s. Berman, the 2015 BMW Philadelphia Amateur champion, plays out of Philadelphia Cricket Club.

   Carey Bina of Radnor Valley Country Club and Arnie Cutrell of Greensburg Country Club each carded a 2-under 68 and are tied for seventh. Two other players are still on the course at 2-under:    Penn State junior Cole Miller, who plays out of Blue Ridge Country Club, and recent Twin Valley graduate (and occasional Stonewall caddy) R.J Wren, who plays out of Applecross Country Club. Both Miller, who had an outstanding sophomore season with the Nittany Lions, and Delaware-bound Wren, still have nine holes to play.

   Leading the group of five players tied for 11^th at 1-under is LuLu Country Club’s Brandon Matthews, coming off one of the finest careers in the history of the Temple program. Matthews, Gary McCabe Jr. of RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve, and Andy Butler of Green Oaks Country Club, all completed rounds of 1-under 69.

   Luke Miller of St. Clair Country Club is 1-under through 13 and Dan Thompson of Windber Country Club is 1-under through nine.
