The Galloway National Golf Club team of Jason Lamp and Noah
Firestone didn’t have far to go as they tamed the neighboring Bay Course at
Seaview Hotel & Golf Club across the bay from Atlantic City, N.J. in
Galloway Township Monday and claimed a two-shot victory.
Lamb, the general manager and director of golf and
membership at Galloway National, and Firestone proved to be a pretty formidable
four-ball team as they put together an 8-under 63 over the classic Bay Course
layout, home to the ShopRite LPGA Classic each year.
They finished two shots better than three pairs, including
Samuel Ambrose and Nick Iacono of Chester Valley Golf Club, Greg Wingate and
Brett Walker of Sunnybrook Golf Club and Dustin McCormick and reigning
Philadelphia Section Omega Player of the Year Alex Knoll out of the Glen Brook
Golf Club pro shop. Those three teams each carded a 6-under 65.
Team Galloway did most of its damage on the front nine,
getting off to a fast start when Firestone birdied the first hole. Both players
birdied the fifth and Lamp made birdie at the sixth before Firestone closed out
a 5-under 32 on the outgoing nine with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and
ninth holes.
Lamp’s birdie at the 10th got the team to 6-under
and Firestone put the finishing touches on Team Galloway’s victory with
back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th holes.
The Lookaway Golf Club team of Mike Little and Laura Schiavo
shared fifth place with Eric Kennedy and Matthew Cocco of Overbrook Golf Club
and Bob Fritz and Ross Seaman of Manufacturers Golf & Country Club, each
duo landing on 5-under 66.
Will Scarborough and Jesse Williams of The Peninsula Golf
& Country Club, Mike Mack and Don Allan of Burlington Country Club and
Anthony Malizia and James Hammer of Bidermann Golf Club finished in a tie for
eighth place, each pair registering a 4-under 67.
Several of the head pros teamed up with multiple members of
their pro shop staffs, a trip to the Jersey Shore a nice reward for a spring
that has been, shall we say, challenging for those who work in the business of
golf.
Three of the five teams tied for 11th place at
3-under 68 gave their respective pro shops two teams among the top 15
finishers. They included Peninsula’s Scarborough and Brandon Laigle, Lookaway’s
Little and Kevin Rossi and Overbrook’s Kennedy and Ashley Grier, the top player
among the Section’s female professionals.
Joining those teams at 3-under were the tandems of Richard
Gibson and Matt Goudie of Lancaster Country Club and Benjamin Debski and
Patrick Garrison of The Springhaven Club.
Leading the way in the non-PGA Professional division was the
team of Chambersburg Country Club head pro Lee Gardenhour and his assistant, Jake
Suder, as they recorded a 5-under 66.
Bidermann’s Malizia and Blake Hinckley and Mark McCarthy and
Nick Dentino of Little Mill Country Club shared runnerup honors, each duo
registering a 4-under 67.
Thomas Gilbert, out of the Gulph Mills Golf Club pro shop,
was the closest of the four closest-to-the-pin winners as he stiffed it to a
foot at the 17th hole. Peninsula’s Williams hit it to four feet,
four inches at the seventh hole, Matthew Zizas of Bala Golf Club drilled it to
10 feet, nine inches at the 11th, and Sunnybrook’s Wingate ended up
a foot and two inches from the cup at the 15th.
Bidermann’s appropriately named Hammer had the long drive at
the third hole and Rob Coyne, out of the North Hills Country Club pro shop,
bombed it the farthest on the ninth hole.
The Pro/Assistant Pro Championship was supported by Club
Car/Golf Cars, Inc., Golf Genius Software, Golf Max, Hath CBD, PRG Golf and the
PGA Tour.
