Maletto halts Gooneratne's win streak by claiming Junior Tour victory with 75 at Lebanon

   Not sure how the weather was for the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Sunday at Lebanon Country Club, but it couldn’t have been great.

   The fall portion of the wraparound 2019-2020 season is starting to wind down and the focus for a lot of the older junior golfers will be on the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in Springettsbury Township, York County where the PIAA Championships teed off Monday.

   But there was an intriguing matchup of future stars at Lebanon in the girls 13-to-15 division as Kayla Maletto of Sinking Spring carded a 3-over-par 75 to beat Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting by six shots to take top honors in the division.

   Maletto dominated the 13-to-15 division in the wraparound 2018-’19 season. I’ll recount her accomplishments when I get around to wrapping up the Graham Company Player of the Year and Sam Penecale Scoring Average honorees.

   Gooneratne had opened the 2019-’20 wraparound campaign by winning, by my count, eight straight starts. Maletto put an end to that impressive winning streak, but this rivalry might be just getting started.

   Maletto made three birdies to offset two bogeys and two double bogeys in a solid effort in what had to be less-than-ideal conditions at Lebanon. Gooneratne had two birdies in an 81 that left her not wearing a gold medal for the first time since late August.

   Elle Overly of Lititiz, who has quietly been playing some pretty good golf herself, finished third in the division with an 87.

   The best round of the day belonged to Sawyer Marten of East Stroudsburg, who fired a 1-over 73 to claim a victory in the boys 13-to-15 division. Marten made an eagle on the par-5 10^th hole and also had four birdies on his scorecard.

   Nick Mahoney of Lewisburg was the runnerup with an 80. Patrick Doran of York took third place with an 88, Julien de Brechard of Brooklyn was fourth with an 89 and Noah Shultz, another York entry, was fifth with a 92.

   Lucas Steinmetz of Gilbertsville finished in sixth place with a 93 and Kole Washleski of Sinking Spring was seventh with a 95.

   Ryan Wilson of Newark, Del. had a steady round that featured 10 pars as he finished ahead of the pack in the 16-to-18 division with an 81. Grey Conta of Hummelstown was the runnerup with an 86.

Mason Baker of Martinsburg took third place with an 88, Clay Breidenstine of Hummelstown was fourth with a 95 and Ryan Reed of Manheim was fifth with a 112.

   Lawson Leeper of York bested the field of nine-holers with an 8-over 44 as he made four pars, including three straight to conclude his round. That enabled Leeper to hold off Zachary Rengen of Mechanicsburg, who claimed runnerup honors with a 45.

   Reagan Garnsey of Dover, Del. was another shot behind Rengen in third place with a 46 and Colton Orris of Hershey and Davis Conaway of West Chester were another shot behind Garnsey in a tie for fourth place as each posted a 47. Nick Linkchorst of Glen Mills took sixth place with a 53.
