The Haverford School took control of the Inter-Ac League
race Tuesday as the Fords claimed the top spot for the third straight time in
one of the league’s mini-tournaments, this time edging defending champion Episcopal
Academy by two shots on their home course at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Haverford School was led by junior Mac Costin, who shared
medalist honors for the day with Malvern Prep junior Matt Civitella at 1-under 34
on the challenging front nine at Gulph Mills.
Costin led the Fords to a 229 total, two shots clear of
Episcopal Academy, which posted a 231. Malvern Prep finished third at 235, Penn
Charter was fourth at 246, Germantown Academy was fifth at 261 and Springside
Chestnut Hill Academy was sixth at 287.
The third straight 5-0 sweep leaves Haverford School with an
18-2 mark with two mini-tournaments to play. Episcopal Academy is second at
14-6, Penn Charter, which captured the opening mini-tournament on its home
course at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, is third at 13-7 and Malvern Prep is
fourth at 11-9. Germantown Academy will be the host at Bluestone Country Club
next Wednesday, Oct. 11 and the season will wrap up when Episcopal hosts the
rest of the Inter-Ac at Merion Golf Club’s East Course Oct. 16.
Episcopal edged Haverford School by a shot at Merion West in
the final mini-tournament last year to claim its first Inter-Ac title since
1999.
Civitella was even-par for his round when he arrived on the
tee at the 112-yard, par-3 fourth hole at Gulph Mills, his final hole of the
day. Civitella hit a wedge to tap-in range for a finishing birdie that enabled him
to tie Costin for medalist honors.
Malvern Prep co-captains Matt Davis, a senior, and Andrew
Curran, a junior, as well as junior John Updike each carded a 3-over 38. Junior
Kevin Hagan had a 42 and Griffin Kennedy rounded out the counters for the
Friars with a 45.
Davis still leads the individual standings with a 116-11-1 mark based on each player's results against the rest of the league in each mini-tournament.
