Ryan grabs lead in Precision Pro Golf Open event with 67 at Turtle Creek

   Caleb Ryan has good vibes at Turtle Creek Golf Club.

   As a sophomore at Norristown last fall, Ryan finished tied for fourth in the District One Class AAA Championship at the 6,576-yard, par-72 Turtle Creek layout, the first step on a road that led him to the PIAA Championship two weeks later.

   Wednesday, in the opening round of a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour Precision Pro Golf Open at the Turtle, Ryan had six birdies in a 5-under 67 that gave him a two-shot lead in the 16-to-18 division after the opening round. The Junior Golf Scoreboard event concludes Thursday.

   A.J. Adams of Malvern is in second place, two shots behind Ryan at 3-under 69. Patrick Sheehan, a Central Bucks East junior who won a Precision Pro Golf Open event at nearby Hickory Creek Golf Club a couple of weeks ago, is in third place at 2-under 70.

   Robert Beck of Allentown matched par with a 72 and is alone in fourth place. Thomas Butler of Telford is in fifth place at 1-over 73 and Michael Hamilton and Conner Gollwitzer are tied for sixth at 4-over 76.

   J.T. Spina, the former Pope John Paul II standout who was the Junior Tour’s 16-to-18 Player of the Year in 2016, Jimmy Gillespie of Glen Mills and Akira Pavey of Dover, Del. are tied for eighth after each carded a 77.

   Hunter King of Atglen carded a 1-over 73 that included two birdies to take the lead in the 13-to-15 division. There is also scoring in the 13-to-18 division in a Junior Golf Scoreboard event and King is tied for fifth overall among the younger group.

   Morgan Lofland of Paoli is second with a 76 and Jack Cooley of Chadds Ford and Davis Flannery of Wayne are tied for third at 77. Joshua Ryan, younger of the Ryan brothers of Norristown, is alone in fifth with an 80.

   Jack Davis of Newtown Square, Joseph Morganti of Havertown, coming off a Junior Tour win Tuesday at Downingtown Country Club, Joseph Taggart of Broomall and Dylan Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting are tied for sixth at 81. Justin Dougherty of Wyndmoor is alone in 10^th at 83.

   Cristea Park of Blue Bell has the lead in the girls 16-to-18 division with a 79 that featured a birdie and nine pars. Maya Torpey of Malvern is in second with an 83.

   Lily Yang of West Chester is the lone competitor in the 13-to-15 division, but her 78 has her in the lead in the overall 13-to-18 JGS scoring. Yang had a steady round with a birdie and 11 pars.

   Megan Adelman of Bryn Mawr grabbed the lead among the nine-holers with a 3-over 39 that included a birdie on the second hole. Hunter Probst of Bear Creek is two shots behind Adelman with a 41.

   Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood is in third place with a 44 and Serena Bagga of Blue Bell is fourth after a 45.

   In the men’s 17-to-24 division, Andrew Simpson of Perkasie grabbed the lead with a 5-over 78 that included birdies at the eighth and 16^th holes. Thomas Schaffer of Collegeville is a shot behind Simpson in second at 78.

   In the women’s 17-to-24 division, Emily McGarrigle of Wernersville has the lead after an opening-round 80. Former Archbishop Prendergast standout Anna Haley is in second place, two shots behind McGarrigle with an 82.

   Former Perkiomen Valley standout Carly Dorminy is in third place with an 84 and Annalia Kostow of Lebanon is fourth after an 87.
