Add Joseph Roeder of Little Mill Country Club to the list of
talented senior golfers on the Golf Association of Philadelphia roster.
A runnerup in last month’s Francis B. Warner Cup (Gross) at
Spring-Ford Country Club, Roeder, a 56-year-old former Air Force pilot who
works in flight simulation at Fort Dix, took the next logical step Thursday by
capturing the title in the Frank H. Chapman Memorial Cup (Gross) at Lu Lu
Country Club.
Roeder carded an even-par 71 over the 6,308-yard, par-71 Lu
Lu layout, a total that was matched by Michael Tash of Tavistock Country Club.
Tash chose not to hang around for a possible playoff and the title was awarded
to Roeder.
“In any GAP tournament, there’s so much good competition,”
Roeder told the GAP website. “It feels really good to be able to just compete
with all of the guys who play here and even better to win.
“I usually shoot 80 in GAP events, so having two good ones
in a row feels good. I’m playing well this year finally. It does mean a lot. I
don’t really think about winning. I just kind of think about trying to play as
good as I can play. Let chips fall where they fall.”
Roeder, a Marlton, N.J. resident, was all over the place in
a birdie, bogey, bogey, birdie, bogey start that left him 1-over through five
holes. He birdied the par-4 11th when his sand wedge from 70 yards
out finished five feet from the hole.
He gave that shot back when he three-putted the par-4 14th
for bogey, but got back to even-par with a birdie at the par-4 16th
when his sand wedge shot from 80 yards away stopped four feet from the hole.
Overbrook Golf Club’s Ray Thompson, who has made a couple of
deep runs on the U.S. Senior Amateur stage, and Ron Weaver of Bent Creek
Country Club were a shot behind Roeder and Tash in a tie for third at 1-over
72.
Four players were tied for fifth at 2-over 73, including
Greg Guyer of Philadelphia Cricket Club, Kenneth Phillips of Lancaster Country
Club, Doug Fedoryshyn of Applebrook Golf Club, and Michael Vassil of The
Country Club of Scranton.
Seven players landed at 3-over 74 in a tie for ninth. They
were: J.R. Cattoni of Huntsville Golf Club; Ed Chylinski of Chester Valley Golf
Club; Thomas Bartolacci Jr. of Huntingdon Valley Country Club; Craig Kliewer of
Honeybrook Golf Club; Alan Wagenschnur of Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club;
Steven Walczak of Wilmington Country Club; and Tom DiCinti of Old York Country
Club at Chesterfield.
Included among the five players tied for 16th at
4-over 75 were: Bob Taylor of Middletown Country Club; Thomas Hyland of Little
Mill; David West of Whitford Country Club; Scott McIntosh of Makefield
Highlands Golf Club; and Frank Brigidi III of Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Six players were another shot back in a tie for 21st
at 5-over 76, including Gary Smith of Pine Valley Golf Club, Gregory Day of Old
York Road Country Club, Mike Owsik of Cobbs Creek Golf Club, Brian Corbett of
The Country Club of Scranton, who was the winner of last month’s Warner Cup,
Brian Rothaus of Five Ponds Golf Club and Mark Dennish of The Ridge at Back
Brook.
Nobody involved in the four-man playoff for the Frank H.
Chapman Memorial Cup Super-Senior division title left the premises, not even
Steve Tagert of Spring-Ford Country Club, who was the first player to post a
2-over 73.
Five hours later, after waiting and watching to see if
anyone could post anything better, Tagert, the 67-year-old retired head of Aqua
Pennsylvania, found himself in a playoff for the title with James Prendergast
of Bellewood Country Club, William Lawler of Fox Hill Country Club and Alan Van
Horn of Commonwealth National Golf Club.
All four players had a wedge in their hands for their
approach to the first playoff hole, the 345-yard, par-4 11th at Lu
Lu, and Tagert’s shot was the best, finishing four feet from the hole. His
birdie putt sealed the deal.
Five players finished two shots behind the foursome involved
in the playoff at 4-over 75, including Frank Politzi of Whitemarsh Valley
Country Club, Richard Speranza of Jericho National Golf Club, Carl Everett of
Merion Golf Club, John Gonsior of Limekiln Golf Club and Ray Pawulich of Little
Mill.
Rounding out the top 10 were three players tied for 10th
at 5-over 76. They were: Bob Majczan of Lookaway Golf Club; John Rowe of
Whitemarsh Valley and Jerry Janeski of Hartefeld National Golf Club.
The Golfers assosiation are too good but if someone's want to use putters for beginners golfers they will choose it from here.
