Led by Jonathan Hewett, a senior from England, DePaul seized
control of the team race after round 2 of the Big East Championship Monday at
Callawassie Island Golf Club’s Dogwood and Magnolia nines in Callawassie
Island, S.C.
Hewett carded as 2-under-par 70 over the 6,983-yard, par-72
Dogwood and Magnolia nines to gain a share of the individual lead with
first-round leader Joey Arcuri, a senior at DePaul from Cincinnati, and
Marquette’s Matt Bachmann, a freshman from Sheboygan Falls, Wis.
Hewett helped the Blue Demons put together the best team
score of the day, a 6-over 294, which, combined with their opening-round 302,
gave them a 20-over 596 total. Seton Hall had a solid 299 in the second round
to move into second place at 27-over 603, seven shots back of DePaul.
Marquette and Butler are tied for third at 37-over 613 after
the Golden Eagles posted a 309 and the Bulldogs carded a 308. Defending
champion Georgetown had shared the opening-round lead with DePaul after a 302,
but the Hoyas struggled to a 314 Monday and are in fifth place at 40-over 616, 20 shots behind the Blue Demons.
Villanova, on the other hand, cut 19 strokes off its
opening-round 322 with a solid 303 to move into seventh place at 49-over 625.
Hewett’s 70 was matched by only one other player for the low
round on a day that featured gusty winds and some occasional downpours.
Combined with his opening-round 74, it left Hewett at even-par 144. Backing him
up for DePaul was Garrett Buckley, a senior from Novi, Mich. who matched par
with a 72 and is alone in seventh place at 3-over 147.
Two Blue Demons, Freddy Thomas, a junior from Lakeville,
Minn., and Jonathan Goldstein a senior from Northbrook, Ill., are tied for 13th
at 10-over 154. Thomas added a 79 to his opening-round 75 while Goldstein
improved two shots from his opening-round 78 with a 76. James Lelliott, a
senior from England, is tied for 21st at 156 after knocking four
shots off his opening-round 80 with a 76.
Butler’s Arcuri, who had opened with a 2-under 70 Sunday, had
a 2-over 74 Monday and Marquette’s Bachmann, who opened with a 73, carded a
1-under 71 as they gained a share of the top spot with Hewett.
Butler’s Patrick Allgeier, a freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind.,
and Seton Hall’s Gen Nagai, a sophomore from the Philippines, are tied for
fourth at 1-over 145. Allgeier added a 73 to his opening-round 72 while Magai
also had a 73 after opening with an even-par 72.
Defending Big East individual champion Lloyd Jefferson Go,
Nagai’s teammate and a fellow Filipino, matched Hereford for the low round of
the day, a 2-under 70 to move into sixth place at 2-over 146. Go is a senior.
Georgetown did get a solid showing from junior Cole Berman,
the former Haverford School standout and 2015 BMW Philadelphia Amateur champion.
Berman moved into a tie for eighth at 6-over 150 as he added a 2-over 74 to his
opening-round 76. Sam Madsen, a junior from Madison, Wis., is tied for 10th
at 9-over 153 after struggling to a 79.
Kevin Jackson, a sophomore from Atlanta, struggled to an 81
and is tied for 18th at 155. Eduardo Blochtein, a freshman from
Delray Beach, Fla., is tied for 30th at 160 after an 81. And Jack
Musgrave, a junior from Chesterton, Ind., is alone in 39th at 164
after an 80.
Lucas Trim, a senior from Tampa, Fla., is wrapping up an
outstanding four-year career at Villanova and, after an opening-round 80, he
carded a solid 1-over 73 and is tied for 10th at 9-over 153. Connor
Daly, a freshman from Bronxville, N.Y., also made a nice improvement in round
2, matching Trim’s 73 after opening with an 81 to gain a share of 13th
at 154.
Junior Andy Butler, a former Manheim Township standout, is
tied for 25th at 157 after carding a 79, Zach Egermayer, a junior
from Glen Rock, N.J., is tied for 33rd after posting a 78 and Andrew
Bowyer, a sophomore from Summit, N.J., continued to struggle over the tough Tom
Fazio design with a second straight 83. He is alone in 40th place.
