Robert McHugh of Wayne, N.J. took advantage of an
unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon to fire a 1-under 70 at Old York Country
Club in Chesterfield, N.J. and win the boys’ 13-to-18 division in the Precision
Pro Elite Tour’s Bustard Memorial Junior Invitational.
The field included top junior players from both the New
Jersey Section PGA Junior Tour and the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour.
The event is named for Paul L. Bustard, a long-time Old York Country Club
member whose family wanted to give back to a game that was such a big part of
Bustard’s life.
McHugh entered Sunday’s second round trailing Luca Jezzeny
of Furlong by two shots after McHugh carded a 5-over 76 over the 6,377-yard,
par-71 Old York layout. But McHugh made four birdies Sunday and his 1-under 70
gave him a two-day total of 4-over 146, one shot better than Jezzeny, who added
a 2-over 73 to his opening-round 74.
William Mitchell of Moorestown, N.J. carded a 77 and Andrew
Gallagher of Mount Laurel, N.J. posted a second straight 76 as they finished in
a tie for third at 152.
Conestoga junior Ryan Tall, the Central League’s individual
champion, carded a solid 3-over 74 to finish in a tie for fifth with Calen Sanderson
of Skillman, N.J. at 153. Sanderson had a 75.
The Precision Pro Elite Tour events don’t break down the
boys and girls divisions into other age groups as most Junior Tour events do.
But Sanderson was one of only two 13-to-15 boys to crack the top 10 in the
Bustard Memorial. The other was Arav Patel of East Brunswick, N.J. who finished
in a tie for ninth with rounds of 80 and 75 for a 155 total.
Nikita Romanov of Wilmington, Del. and Austin Devereux of
Brielle, N.J. finished in a tie for seventh at 154. Romanov carded a 74 Sunday
and Devereux posted a 76.
Joining Patel in the tie for ninth at 155 were Jack Simon of
Sparta, N.J. and Danel Yam of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., both of who had a
second-round 75.
Norristown High sophomore Caleb Ryan, a PIAA Class AAA
qualifier, had a 75 Sunday to finish in a tie for 12th with Dawson
Anders of Telford, who bounced back from an opening-round 83 with a solid
2-over 73 Sunday.
On the girls side, Phoebe Brinker of Wilmington, Del. added
a steady 1-over 72 over an Old York layout that measures 5,317 yards for the
girls, to her opening-round 77 for a six-shot victory over Agnes Irwin junior
Kaitlyn Lees.
Brinker had a birdie, two bogeys and 15 pars in Sunday’s
final round to finish with a 7-over 149 total. Lees, the reigning two-time
Pennsylvania Junior champion, added a 77 to her opening-round 78 to finish
second at 155.
Rylie Heflin, the reigning Women’s Golf Association of
Philadelphia Junior champion from Avondale, improved nine shots from her
opening-round 86 with a 77 Sunday to finish alone in third place at 163.
Anna Bowman of Westfield, N.J. was another two shots back in
fourth at 165 after a solid 79 in the second round. Bowman was also the low
13-to-15 finisher. Camille O’Halloran of Northfield, N.J. had an 88 Sunday to
finish fifth at 168.
Katie Li of Basking Ridge, N.J. knocked 15 shots off her
opening-round 93 with a 78 Sunday to finish sixth at 171. Sofia Amoroso of West
Chester had an 84 in the second round to take seventh at 177. Mehr Sawant of
Holmdel, N.J. had an 87 in the second round to finish eighth at 181.
Marissa Benedict of Bayonne, N.J. had an 84 in the second
round to share ninth placed with Emma Shen of Tenafly, N.J. at 185. Shen carded
an 88 in Sunday’s second round. Katherine Lu of Plainsboro, N.J. had a 97 in
the second round to finish 11th at 195.
Michaila Cheung of Toms River, N.J. and Nicole Criscone of
Clifton Park, N.Y. both improved on their opening rounds significantly to
finish in a tie for 12th at 201. Cheung bounced back from an opening-round
109 to post a 92 in the second round while Criscone rebounded from an
opening-round 108 with a 93 in the second round.
In addition to Bowman, Li, Shen and Criscone would also
normally be classified as 13-to-15 competitors.
