Isztwan helps Penn Charter get right back in the Inter-Ac race

Penn Charter junior Brian Isztwan carded a 35 at Sunnybrook Golf Club Wednesday to lead the Quakers to a sweep of the Inter-Ac League mini-tournament hosted by Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
It was the second sweep of an Inter-Ac mini-tournament by Penn Charter and put the Quakers right back in the thick of a four-team race for the title. Penn Charter finished at 228, reigning Inter-Ac champion Malvern Prep was second at 234, Episcopal Academy was third at 237, Haverford School was fourth at 239, host Springside Chestnut Hill was fifth at 258 and Germantown Academy was sixth at 265.
Episcopal retained its spot atop the standings at 15-5 with two mini-tournaments remaining. Malvern Prep is in second place at 14-6 with Penn Charter and Haverford School tied for third at 13-7. Episcopal Academy hosts the next mini-tournament Tuesday at Merion Golf Club’s West Course with Haverford School hosting the Inter-Ac finale Wednesday at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Malvern Prep was led by sophomore Andrew Curran at Sunnybrook with a 37. Sophomore John Updike, who sits atop the Inter-Ac’s individual rankings, added a 38, Gavin Sims chipped in with a 39 and Matt Davis, Matt Civitella and Eric McLaughlin each came in at 40 for the Friars.
Episcopal got some big contributions from some of its younger players to grab third place and remain atop the standings. The Churchmen were led by sophomore J.R. Rauscher with a 37. Freshmen Jacob Zeng and Case Hummer and junior Jon Perry each carded a 39, junior Cole Kemmerer added a 40 and junior Ashton Dunn had a 43.
Through four mini-tournaments it looks like a two-man race between Updike and Isztwan, who captured the Inter-Ac individual title two years ago as a freshman, for the top spot in the season-long individual rankings. Updike is at 163-18-7 and Isztwan is 160-21-7.
Rounding out the top 10 are Episcopal’s Zeng in third and Perry in fourth, Haverford School’s Davis Rosato in fifth, Malvern Prep’s Davis in sixth, Penn Charter’s Noah Schwartz in seventh, Malvern Prep’s Curran in eighth, Haverford School’s Peter Garno in ninth and Sam Walker in 10th.
