Updike, Garno finish 1-2 in Junior Tour stop at the Country Club of Harrisburg

   Inter-Ac League rivals John Updike and Peter Garno finished 1-2, respectively, in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Monday at the Country Club of Harrisburg, a William Flynn design.

   Updike, who had an outstanding freshman season while leading Malvern Prep to the Inter-Ac title last fall, and Garno, a Haverford School sophomore, also earned a spot in the local qualifier for the Junior PGA Championship July 11 at Whitford Country Club.

   Updike had a 6-over 77 over the 6,317-yard, par-71 Country Club of Harrisburg layout in a round that featured a birdie on the par-5 14^th. That gave him the top spot in the 13-to-15 division as he finished a shot better than Garno, who had a 78.

   Thomas Butler of Telford and Francis Gregor of North Wales finished in a tie for third at 80, Patrick Isztwan of Huntingdon Valley and Jack Sullivan of Petersburg, N.J. shared fifth place and each carding an 81, and Jacob Aaron of Harrisburg and Ryan D’Ariano of West Chester finished tied for seventh at 82.

   Tyler Boucher of Haddonfield, N.J. finished ninth with an 86, Luke Thompson of Palmyra was 10^th with an 87 and Radnor sophomore Blake Stephano finished 11^th with an 88.

   Updike, Garno, Butler, Gregor, Patrick Isztwan and Sullivan are the players out of the 13-to-15 division who earned berths in the Junior PGA Championship qualifier.

   Lou Baker of Timonium, Md. went 1-under on both nines at the Country Club of Harrisburg to take top honors in the 16-to-18 division with a 2-under 69.

   Jack Halloren of Timonium, Md., coming off a big week in the Junior Golf Scoreboard Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series last week, and Penn Charter junior Brian Isztwan of Huntingdon Valley, shared second place, each carding a 1-over 72. Halloren’s round included a 2-under 33 on the back nine.

   Nicholas Scott of Harleysville and Matthew Marino of Malvern finished tied for fourth, each carding a 4-over 75, Robert Falconer of Mechanicsburg and Andrew Forjan of York shared sixth place at 77, and Wills Montgomery of Exton finished eighth with a 78.

   Four players – Zachary Fails of Hummelstown, Connor Boham of Collegeville, Garrett Barilar of Bloomsburg and Matthew Graeff of Blue Bell – rounded out the top 10 as they finished tied for ninth at 81. They also were the last of the 16-to-18 division to earn tickets to Whitford for the Junior PGA Championship qualifier.

   Thea Nagle of Mechanicsburg was the lone competitor in the girls 16-to-18 division and won it with a 105.

   Lily Yang of West Chester won the 13-to-15 division with a 90. Lauren Golden of Wyoming finished second with a 92, Amanda Gerrish of Hummelstown took third with a 98 and Anna McCormick of Harrisburg placed fourth with a 102.

   William Pabst Jr. captured top honors among the nine-holers with a 3-over 38. Pabst also earned a trip to the Junior PGA Championship qualifier for the girls 13-to-15 and 16-to-18 divisions and the nine-holers July 11 at LuLu Country Club.

   Win Thomas of Coatesville finished second with a 42, Chase Stephano of Radnor took third with a 44 and Ean Morrison was fourth with a 46.
