Steinmetz, Sheftic tied for 36th at PGA Professional Championship

   Spring-Ford Country Club head pro Rich Steinmetz and Merion Golf Club head of instruction Mark Sheftic will have some work to do in the final round of the 49^th PGA Professional National Championship to earn a ticket to the PGA Championship, the last of the four major professional championships.

   Steinmetz and Sheftic are tied for 36^th at 1-over 217 following the third round at the Turning Stone Golf Resort’s Atunyote Course in Verona, N.Y. The top 20 finishers earn a berth in the PGA, which will be played at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. Steinmetz qualified for the PGA out of this event the last time it was played at Baltusrol in 2005.

   Steinmetz had a 3-over 75 in Tuesday’s third round while Sheftic, who has qualified for the PGA three times out of this event, carded a 2-over 74.

   Dave Quinn of the Links Golf Club was the only other member of the Philadelphia Section PGA contingent to make the 36-hole cut. Quinn posted a 3-over 75 and failed to make the 54-hole cut. Quinn ended up at 5-over 221. The cut fell at 3-over 219.

   Omar Uresti, a 47-year-old former PGA Tour player from Austin, Texas, remained atop the leaderboard at Turning Stone. He carded a 2-under 70 for a 54-hole total of 11-under 205. Uresti played in the National Club Pro, as this event was known for years, for the first time when it was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club a year ago and finished fourth.

   Mark Brown, the 49-year-old head pro at the Tam O’Shanter Club in Brookville, N.Y., trails Uresti by two shots after posting a 3-under 69 for a 9-under 207 total.
