They are the high school stars of the future, names you’ll
be hearing about for years to come.
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s top coed
12-and-under players got together at Phoenixville Country Club Thursday. The
division plays nine holes when it competes on the Junior Tour and in
Phoenixville they got to play on one of the very best nine-hole courses in the
area, designed by Hugh Wilson, the one and the same architect of one of this
area’s most treasured layouts, Merion Golf Club’s East Course.
Lawson Leeper of York got off to a rough start with a triple
bogey at the first hole and then played 5-over golf the rest of the way to
capture the victory with an 8-over 43 total.
The depth of talent among these youngsters was evident as
only six shots separated the top 16 finishers, all of whom broke 50.
Thomas Ploszay of Berwyn and Ian Larsen of Glenmoore shared
second place, each carding a 9-over 44 to finish a shot behind Leeper. Both
players birdied the par-5 fifth hole.
Ravi Khanna of Bryn Mawr finished in fourth place with a 45
and Chase Mitstifer of Sinking Spring and Jake Hollerback of Millsboro, Del.
both landed on 46 to share fifth place.
West Chester’s Davis Conaway, who has five wins to his
credit since the Junior Tour resumed play from a coronavirus-enforced layout,
headed a group of five players tied for seventh place, each coming in with a
47.
Joining Conaway at that figure were Savannah Laverty of
Moorestown, N.J., Ian Rotto of Kennett Square, Nathan Lobo of Collegeville and
Callahan Harrell of York.
Brayden Mitchell of Merchantville, N.J., Meredith Finger of
Wilmington, Del. and Declan Conner of Swarthmore finished in a tie for 12th
place, each signing for a 48.
Chase Wilson of Talleyville, Del. and Liam McFadden of Bryn
Mawr shared 15th place, each carding a 49.
