Sandler heats up with a 72 at Yardley on his way to a Junior Tour victory


   Zachary Sandler of Gladwyne matched par with a 72 as he turned up the heat with the temperature rising on the golf course to claim a victory in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Yardley Country Club Monday.
   Sandler had birdies at the sixth and 10th holes on his way to an even-par score over the 6,294-yard, par-72 Yardley layout. Scott Hughes of Ambler had two birdies on the front nine and rattled off six straight pars on the back nine as he took runnerup honors with a 2-over 74.
   Michael Walz of Berwyn and Luke Turse of Hainesport, N.J. shared third place as each posted a 4-over 76. Nicholas Henn of Yardley took fifth with a 77, Daniel Fitzgerald of New Hope was sixth with a 79 and John Lee of Jamison was seventh with an 80.
   Robert Dominy of Moorestown, N.J. finished eighth with an 81, Brendan Reilly of Doylestown was ninth with a 92 and Michael Morris of Yardley rounded out the top 10 as he finished alone in 10th place with a 105.
   Steve Lorenzo, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at La Salle last fall, had four birdies to end up atop the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division with a 3-over 75.
   Ryan Rearden of Yardley and Calen Sanderson, a sophomore at Holy Ghost Prep from Newtown, shared runnerup honors as each landed on 4-over 76. Rearden finished strong with back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th holes while Sanderson had back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh holes.
   Mario Ventresca III of Blue Bell, Justin Dougherty of Wyndmoor and John Bradbeer of Bryn Mawr finished in a three-way tie for fourth place, each carding a 5-over 77. Wissahickon senior Samuel Barsh and Joshua Cicco of Yardley shared seventh place, each signing for a 79.
   Rounding out the top 10 were three players tied for ninth at 80, including Pennsbury senior Will Gerity, Tyler Schmidt of Langhorne and Brett Ostroski of Dallas.
   The best score among the girls also came from the younger 13-to-15 division as Baldwin freshman Megan Adelman had birdies at the fifth and seventh holes on her way to an 83 that gave her her third Junior Tour victory of the season. Adelman finished seventh in the Inter-Ac League Championship at French Creek Golf Club as an eighth-grader in the spring.
   Emma Reilly of Doylestown’s Team Reilly was the runnerup with an 87 that included a birdie at the eighth hole and four pars. Caroline Gola, a member of Mount St. Joseph’s District One Class AAA championship team as a freshman last fall, had six pars as she finished third with a 94.
   Gola’s teammate at the Mount, junior Clare Gimpel, a Class AAA East Regional qualifier in each of her first two scholastic seasons, had a birdie on the eighth hole as she carded an 84 that gave her the top spot in the 16-to-18 division. It was also Gimpel’s third Junior Tour win of the season.
   Springside Chestnut Hill Academy junior Emma Schotsch was the runnerup to Gimpel with an 87 that featured seven pars. Schotsch finished third in the Inter-Ac Championship at French Creek in the spring. Skye Mada of Cherry Hill, N.J. took third with a 106.
   Matthew Sanderson of Newtown’s Team Sanderson had four pars as he bested the field of nine-holers with an 8-over 44. Colton Orris of Hershey was the runnerup with a 48.
   Alex Fessler of Jamison had three straight pars on his way to a 54 that earned him a third-place finish. Brady Kelly of Warrington took fourth place with a 57.
