Scorecard playoff works in DeAngelis' favor as he claims victory in Tee it Forward -- Spring Net Championship

   Joe DeAngelis has come out on the short end of a couple of scorecard playoffs in Golf Association of Philadelphia events, so when he won the Tee it Forward – Spring Net Championship in that manner Thursday, well, let’s just say winning felt better.

   The 66-year-old Jericho National Golf Club member piled up 42 points in the modified Stableford scoring, including 21 on the back nine at Heidelberg Country Club in Bernville, Berks County, to beat out Greg Smith of Radley Run Country Club for the victory.

   “I’ve been playing in these events for so long,” DeAngelis told the GAP website. “I’ve tried many times. To finally get (a trophy) is a great feeling.”

   This one was especially sweet for the Newtown resident because it proves that his rehabilitation from January hip-replacement surgery is right on schedule. And yeah, because this time the scorecard playoff fell in his favor.

   Smith finished with 19 points on the back nine, two less than DeAngelis, who picked up a pair of natural birdies on the incoming nine that gave him the edge. Pretty nice work for a guy playing to a slope-adjusted 14 handicap at Heidelberg.

   At the 115-yard, par-3 11^th hole, DeAngelis sent a 9-iron to 10 feet from the cup and rolled in the birdie try. At the 320-yard, par-4 14^th hole, a 5-hybrid also finished 10 feet from the hole and DeAngelis once again buried the birdie putt.

   Jerry Whitman of Commonwealth National Golf Club finished two points behind the top two to end up alone in third place with 40.

   Three players shared fourth place with 38 points apiece, including Gerry McCloy of Flourtown Country Club, Matt Peters of Five Ponds Golf Club and John Puskar of Kennett Square Golf & Country Club.

   Daniel Keegan of White Oaks Country Club finished alone in seventh place with 37 points and Michael Kyle of Talamore Country Club and Mick Dunphy of Flourtown Country Club shared eighth place, each compiling 36 points.

   Rounding out the top 10 was Jason Marie of Five Ponds, who finished alone in 10^th place with 34 points.

   Alison Kellock of Flourtown Country Club was the only woman to tee it up at Heidelberg and claimed the victory in the women’s flight.

   The 53-year-old Oreland resident carded a solid 94 that was good for 28 Stableford points. Kellock is a regular in GAP events and is the reigning Winter Series Women’s Amateur (Gross) Player of the Year.
