McCabe matches par at Wyncote to claim a Junior Tour victory

Devon Prep’s Ryan McCabe, a Media resident, will be one of the best high school golfers in Pennsylvania when the fall season tees off in late August.
He was the District One Class AA champion as a freshman and finished 15th in the PIAA Championship. When Devon Prep moved to the Catholic League last fall, McCabe captured the District 12 Class AA crown and finished in a tie for second in the PIAA Championship.
McCabe’s ability was on display Monday as he matched par with a 72 at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford, where the wind always blows, to top the field in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop.
McCabe had three birdies in a strong showing over the 6,350-yard, par-72 Wyncote layout. Garnet Valley senior Jake Sokalsky kept it in the fairway off the tee all day as he finished just a shot behind McCabe in second place with a 1-over 73.
It was another eight shots behind Sokalsky to Luke Pastore of Holmes in third place with an 81. Holmes had four pars and two birdies early to get his round going. Hunter King of Atglen took fourth with an 83.
Strath Haven senior Nick Cardow placed fifth with an 85, Rocco Giannangeli of Oxford was sixth with an 86 and Lachie Alexander of Bryn Mawr was seventh with a 90.
Quinn Bookbinder of Wayne and Matthew Todd of Lincoln University shared eighth place, each posting a 91, and Trevor Dydo of Ephrata rounded out the top 10 as he finished alone in 10th place with a 92.
Joseph Madden, playing on his home course at Wyncote, carded a 5-over 77 to finish first in in the 13-to-15 division. It was Madden’s first career Junior Tour victory. Noah Kim of Royersford had nine pars as he carded a solid 79 to claim runnerup honors.
Jeet Patel of Ephrata and Eli Shah of Newtown Square finished in a tie for third place, each signing for an 80. Kristof Kopecky of Garnet Valley took fifth place with an 81, Radnor sophomore Chase Stephano was sixth with an 83, Drew Clark of Kennett Square was seventh with an 84 and John Lee of Jamison was eighth with an 85.
Ryan Garvey of Media finished ninth with a 90 and Alec Plante of Glen Mills and Michael Dignazio of Wilmington, Del. rounded out the top 10 as they shared 10th place, each carding a 93.
Ava Svindland of Wilmington, Del. was the only entry in the girls 13-to-15 division and posted a 90. She made a couple of early pars to get her round off to a good start.
It was a three-way logjam at the top of the leaderboard among the nine-holers as Declan Conner of Swarthmore, Hank Kancher of Philadelphia and Sean Curran of Newtown Square each carded a solid 7-over 43 to share medalist honors.
Samuel Feeney of West Chester and Jake Grossman of Elkins Park finished in a tie for fourth place, each posting a 46. Jax Puskar of Kennett Square took sixth with a 50.
