Hagerty, Li the winners in rain-shortened Paul J. Bustard Memorial Invitational

   The 5^th Annual Precision Pro Golf Paul J. Bustard Memorial Invitational was scheduled to be a 36-hole event Saturday and Sunday at Old York Country Club in Chesterfield, N.J., but Saturday’s miserable weather shortened the event to 18 holes Sunday.

   The Paul J. Bustard is played in memory of a longtime member at Old York Country Club whose family wanted to give back to the game he loved with an event for junior golfers. The field was comprised of top players from the New Jersey Section PGA Junior Tour and the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour.

   Benny Hagerty of Manasquan, N.J. fired a 4-over 74 over the 6,607-yard, par-71 Old York layout to capture the overall boys title. Hagerty’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 16^th hole.

   Devon Prep sophomore Ryan McCabe, coming off a tie for second in the PIAA Class AA Championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort last week, shared second place with another Philly Junior Tour standout, Nikita Romanov of Wilmington, Del. McCabe and Romanov each carded a 5-over 76.

   Tyler Lee was another shot behind McCabe and Romanov in fourth with a 77, Garrett Kessler was fifth with a 78 and Plymouth-Whitemarsh sophomore Dylan Gooneratne was sixth with a 79.

   Six players landed on 80 and shared seventh place, including a couple of Inter-Ac League players. Haverford School sophomore Jake Maddaloni, who came up big a couple of times in the Fords’ drive to their second straight Inter-Ac title, and Malvern Prep junior Ryan Kennedy headed the group tied for seventh.

   Joining Maddaloni  and Kennedy at 80 were West Chester East’s Cole Shew, Zachary Loninger, Joseph Lostumbo and Bennett Knowles.

   Katie Li of Basking Ridge, N.J. led a sweep by the Jersey girls of the top three spots in the overall girls division with a 3-over 74. Li had four birdies, including three straight from Nos. 11 to 13 over an Old York layout that measured 5,717 yards for the girls.

   Megan Meng of Pennington, N.J. and Sun Hwang of Fort Lee, N.J. shared runnerup honors as each posted a 76, two shots back of Li.

   Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood, who earned a trip to the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course on northern California’s Monterey Peninsula last summer, finished fourth with an 81. Yermish, who plays out of Rolling Green Golf Club, qualified for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, which will be contested at the Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday of Masters week next spring.

   Victoria Kim, the West Chester East freshman who captured the District One Class AAA title at Turtle Creek Golf club earlier this month, finished fifth with an 82.

   Ava O’Sullivan, who helped Downingtown East finish second in the PIAA Class AAA team competition last week at Heritage Hills, and Sarah Scarpill, a PIAA Class AAA East Regional qualifier at Central Bucks East, shared sixth place, each posting an 84.

   Leading the foursome of players who finished tied for eighth at 85 was Pennsbury sophomore Jade Gu, the PIAA Class AAA East Regional champion a couple of weeks ago at Golden Oaks Golf Club. Joining Gu at 85 were Kiera Bartholomew, Kaia Wu and Katherine Lu.
