Wren, Reisner help Temple finish fifth in River Run Collegiate

   Temple, getting top-10 individual performances from Trey Wren, a senior from Suffolk, Va. and redshirt junior Erik Reisner, a two-time Central League champion at Harriton, finished fifth in the River Run Collegiate hosted by Davidson at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.

   The Owls struggled in the opening round of Monday’s double round with a 304 over the 7,208-yard, par-72 River Run layout, but improved by 13 shots with a 3-over 291 in the afternoon, a score they matched in Tuesday’s final round for a 22-over 586 total.

   James Madison, out of the Colonial Athletic Conference, fired the best team round of the tournament, a 7-under 281, in Tuesday’s final round to capture the title with a 1-under 863 total. The Dukes posted rounds of 4-over 292 and 2-over 290 in Monday’s double round and trailed Charlotte by five shots before surging to the top of the leaderboard in the final round.

   Furman closed with a 3-under 285 and just missed catching James Madison, finishing up with an even-par 864 total. Host Davidson finished with a 1-over 289 and took third at 3-over 867. Charlotte was another shot behind the Wildcats in fourth at 4-over 868 after posting a final round of 3-over 291.

   It was another 18 shots back to Temple at 586 in fifth in the 13-team field.

   The Dukes were led by Walker Cress, a junior from Concord, N.C. who finished alone in sixth in the individual standings at 3-under 213 after closing with a 2-under 70. The individual title went to Furman’s Keller Harper, a junior from Atlanta who opened with a 4-under 68 Monday morning, added a 3-under 69 in the afternoon and closed with a 2-under 70 for a 9-under 207 total.

   Backing up Cress for James Madison were Ben Tucker, a senior from Australia, and Ryan Cox, a junior from England, both of whom landed in the group tied for 13^th at 1-over 217. Both bettered par in the final round with Tucker firing a 4-under 68, leading the Dukes’ Tuesday surge, and Cox posting a 2-under 70.

   Nacho Mantero, a sophomore from Spain, finished in the group tied for 19^th at 4-over 220 after carding a final round of 1-over 73. Nick Schlickenrieder, a freshman from Switzerland, matched par in the final-round with a counting 72 and finished in the group tied for 42^nd at 228. Schlickenrider’s 1-over 73 in the second round was also an important counter.

   Davidson’s John Long, a senior from Lexington, Mass., was the runnerup in the individual chase, two shots behind Harper at 7-under 209. Long opened with a 5-under 67 before adding a 70 and finishing up with an even-par 72.

   Furman’s Lamar Bruns, a senior from Duncan, S.C., finished alone in third, two more shots behind Long at 5-under 211 after finishing up with a 2-under 70. Bruns opened with a 4-under 68.

   Elon’s William Harwood, a junior from Columbia, S.C., and Charlotte’s John Gough, a junior from England, shared fourth place, each ending up at 4-under 212. Harwood finished up with one of the best rounds Tuesday, a 3-under 69, while Gough, who had opened with a 67, closed with a 2-over 74.

   Charlotte’s Connor Armistead, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., finished a shot behind JMU’s Cress in seventh at 2-under 214. He posted a final round of 1-under 71.

   Temple’s Wren and Charlotte’s Ben Woodruff, a freshman from Huntersville, N.C., finished in a tie for eighth at 1-under 215. Wren was steady throughout, opening with a 1-under 71 and adding a pair of even-par 72s. Woodruff matched Wren’s effort, opening with a 71 and matching par in each of the last two rounds.

   Reisner equaled the best round of the day with a 4-under 68, a personal-best at Temple for him. That enabled him to finish in the group tied for 10^th at even-par 216.

   John Barone, a redshirt senior from Dunmore finished among the group tied for 38^th at 227 after a final round of 4-over 76. Senior Gary McCabe, a former La Salle standout from Collegeville, finished in the group tied for 51^st at 231 as he matched Barone’s final-round 76.

   Rounding out the starting lineup was freshman Conor McGrath, an Academy of the New Church product. McGrath’s opening round was not recorded for whatever reason, but he posted a pair of 3-over 75s in the second and third rounds, both of which were counters for the Owls.

   Sophomore Dawson Anders, a Souderton product who was the 2017 Golf Association of Philadelphia Junior Boys’ champion, competed as an individual and finished alone in 72^nd at 238, struggling to a final-round 86 after rounds of 76 and 77 in Monday’s double round.
