Homer brothers go to scorecard tiebreaker after each fires a 74 at Quail Hollow

   The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour headed south for a stop at Wild Quail Golf & Country Club in Dover, Del. Wednesday and it turned into quite a battle between the Homer brothers of Wilmington.

   The only difference between Matthew Homer and Jeffrey Homer was that Matthew was one shot better than Jeffrey on the back nine and that was the tiebreaker edge that gave Matthew the win in the 13-to-15 division.

   They’re both listed as Class of 2023, so I’m guessing they’re twins. But I do know for sure that they both shot a 2-over-par 74 over the 6,502-yard, par-72 Wild Quail layout. Pretty good playing for a couple of what, eighth-graders.

   Evan Barbin of Elkton, Md. finished third behind the Homer brothers with a solid 4-over 76. Anthony Ciconte of Wilmington finished fourth with an 82 and Nathan Lutz of Middletown, Del. was fifth with an 87.

   Caleb Ryan of Norristown topped the field in the 16-to-18 division as he rallied after shooting a 42 on the front nine with a sparkling 34 on the back nine for a 4-over 76. Ryan, who has reached the PIAA Class AAA Championship while representing Norristown High in his sophomore and junior seasons, spent Tuesday lugging younger brother Joshua’s bag in the BMW Philadelphia Amateur’s 36-hole stroke-play qualifying at Green Valley Country Club and Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.

   Akira Pavey of Dover, Del. was the runnerup, three shots behind Ryan with a 79. Pavey got his round off to a fast start with three straight pars and a birdie. Robbie Copit of Wynnewood got it going on the back nine with a 39 that enabled him to take third with an 81.

   Patrick Gogarty of Dagsboro, Del. finished fourth with an 86 and Collin Sclesky of Wilmington was fifth with a 101.

   Olivia Perry of Millsboro, Del. was the only player to tee it up in the girls divisions and carded a solid 88 to capture the 16-to-18 division.

   Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth Beach, Del. went 1-under for a four-hole stretch with a birdie at six and pars at five, seven and eight on her way to a 6-over 42 that topped the field of nine-holers in her first Junior Tour start of the year.

   Brockstedt started the spring with a trip to Augusta National Golf Club to participate in the National Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals competition that kicks off Masters week. She finished tied for fourth in the girls 10-and-11 age group.

   Hunter Probst of Bear Creek was the runnerup with a 44 that included back-to-back pars on seven and eight. A third member of Team Homer of Wilmington, Jack Homer, finished third with a 45.

Avery McCrery of Wilmington finished fourth with a 47, another member of Wilmington’s Team Ciconte, Joseph Ciconte, was fifth with a 52 and Tate Wyatt of Dover, Del. was fifth with a 61.
