Shew comes back firing to claim Junior Tour victory at The Vineyards

While winter refuses to loosen its grip on the region, the calendar said St. Patrick’s Day, so it was time for the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour to get going again with its annual spring opener at The Vineyards at Renault in Egg Harbor City, N.J.
By recent standards, it wasn’t a horrible day. Not sure if the temperature reached 50 at the Jersey Shore, but the wind backed off a little. And the guys and gals who regularly tee it up on the Junior Tour have certainly played in colder conditions.
It certainly didn’t seem to bother Cole Shew of West Chester, who fired a 1-over-par 73 over the 6,308-yard, par-72 Vineyards layout to capture top honors in the 16-to-18 division. Shew had four birdies, two on each side, and generally seemed to be in midseason form.
Jackson Paradee of Dover, Del. wasn’t bad either as he claimed runnerup honors with a 2-over 74.
Central Bucks East junior Patrick Sheehan, who played some, at times, spectacular golf in earning runnerup honors to Spring-Ford’s Ben Pochet in last fall’s District One Class AAA Championship at Turtle Creek, headed a trio of players tied for third at The Vineyards at 4-over 76.
Joining Sheehan in the tie for third were Finnian McGarry of Haddonfield, N.J. – possibly enjoying a little luck of the Irish -- and Troy Kelleher of Clarks Summit. Bryan Donato of Chester Springs finished alone in sixth at 78.
Kyle Rogers of Jackson, N.J. and Calen Sanderson of Skillman, N.J. shared seventh place, each posting an 80. Rounding out the top 10 were Christopher Vonhof of Georgetown, Del. and Jake Armstrong of Haddonfield, who finished tied for ninth, each posting an 82.
James Vinson of Princeton Junction, N.J. captured top honors in the 13-to-15 division with an 8-over 80 that featured a birdie on the sixth hole.
Kevin Motil of Sewell, N.J. and Adrian Jordan of Lawrenceville, N.J. shared second place as each carded an 82. James Ulsh of Carlisle finished fourth with an 83 and Jacob Sokalsky, a sophomore at Garnet Valley, was another shot behind Ulsh in fifth with an 84.
Kendall Gordon of Burlington Township, N.J. finished sixth with an 87, Elijah Ruppert of Fleetwood was seventh with an 88, Jackson Reid of Bryn Mawr took eighth with a 90 and Jaden Han of Mahwah, N.J. placed ninth with a 92.
Rounding out the top 10 were Matthew Hammond of Lamberton, N.J. and Dante Biloni of Lancaster, both of whom came in with a 94. Hammond was the Sam Penecale Scoring Average Leader among the nine-holers for the 2016-’17 Junior Tour campaign.
Kayla Gutierrez of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. was unopposed in winning the girls 16-to-18 division. She posted a solid 84 that featured a birdie on the 14th hole.
Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood took top honors in the girls 13-to-15 division in a scorecard playoff with Haverford High freshman Riley Quartermain after each carded an 85. Yermish’s 28 shots over the final six holes gave her the tiebreaker edge. Yermish’s round was highlighted by a pair of birdies.
The division featured several players whose games improved noticeably in 2017 and they didn’t show much rust after several months during which probably the only place they could swing a golf club was by utilizing a simulator.
Victoria Kim of West Chester finished a shot behind Yermish and Quartermain in third place with an 86. Angelina Tolentino of Mount Laurel, N.J. and Kathleen Mark, a Media resident who plays out of Rolling Green Golf Club, shared fourth place as each carded a 90.
Addi Mann of Cherry Hill, N.J. finished sixth with a 91, Gwendolyn Powell of Madison Township was seventh with a 95 and Katrinia Cabinian of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. placed eighth with a 96.
Among the nine-holers, Michael Maslanka of Taylor finally emerged with the victory after the scorecard playoff went several criteria deep as he and Nicholas Gross of Downingtown each carded a solid 4-over 40.
Hunter Probst of Bear Creek was another shot behind Maslanka and Gross in third with a 41. John Keba of Emmaus finished fourth with a 45 and Nicholas Joyce of Quakertown took fifth with a 46.
Daniel Shin of Horsham finished sixth with a 47, Mason Tucker of York was seventh with a 50 and Jillian Burks of Paoli was eighth with a 51.
Rachel Joyce, the second of the Quakertown Joyces to tee it up, finished ninth with a 52 and Reed Krosse of York rounded out the top 10 with a 56.
