Grimstad, Weber lead Miami to top of leaderboard at Hurricane Invitational

   Host Miami, getting solid showings from its top two players, carded a solid 2-under-par 286 Tuesday over the classic Donald Ross design at the Biltmore in Coral Gables, Fla. to take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Hurricane Invitational.

   Renate Grimstad, a sophomore from Norway, grabbed the individual lead, adding a 1-under 71 over the 6,150-yard, par-72 Biltmore layout to her opening-round 68 for a 5-under 139 total. Teammate Dewi Weber, a junior from the Netherlands, matched the day’s best score with her 3-under 69, which, combined with her opening-round 73, left her in a tie for fourth at 2-under 142.

   Their strong showings enabled Miami, No. 24 in the latest Golfstat rankings, to post a 2-under 574 total. The Hurricanes, playing out of the ACC, are the only team under par after two rounds. They had matched par in Monday’s opening round with a 288.

   The Big 12’s Oklahoma, at No. 16 the highest-rated team in the field, fell back with a 4-over 292 after opening with a 3-under 285 and is in second place, three shots behind Miami at 1-over 577. No. 64 Coastal Carolina posted a solid even-par 288 to maintain its hold on third place at 4-over 580.

   Two more ACC entries, No. 60 Maryland and No. 45 Virginia Tech, round out the top five with the Terrapins in fourth at 15-over 591 and the Hokies in fifth at 17-over 593. Maryland carded a 6-over 294 in the second round while Virginia Tech posted a 10-over 298.

   It was a bit of a disappointing day for No. 58 Penn State, which carded a 307 after opening with a 300 and fell back to 10^th place in the 13-team field at 31-over 607.

   Backing up Grimstad and Weber was Kristyna Frydlova, a freshman from the Czech Republic who fired a 1-under 71 after opening with a 75 and is tied for 11^th at 2-over 146.

   Macarena Aguilera, a sophomore from Argentina, added a 75 to her opening-round 72 and is tied for 16^th at 3-over 147. Rounding out the Miami lineup was Serena Hou, a freshman from Rowland Heights, Calif. who is tied for 59^th at 157 after adding a 78 to her opening-round 79.

   Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Va., also equaled the low round of the day with a 3-under 69 after opening with a 71 to move into sole possession of second place in the individual standings, a shot behind Grimstad at 4-under 140. Oklahoma’s Rylee Pedigo, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, is another shot back in third at 3-under 141 after adding an even-par 72 to her opening-round 69.

   Joining Miami’s Weber at 2-under 142 in a tie for fourth is Tilda Larsson, a junior from Sweden at Division II Barry. Larsson posted a 2-over 74 after sharing the opening-round lead with Grimstad with a 68.

   Coastal Carolina’s Sena Ersoy, a junior from Turkey, is alone in sixth place at 1-under 143 after adding a 1-under 71 to her opening-round 72.

   Maryland’s Virunpat Olankitkunchai, a freshman from Thailand, heads a group of three players tied for seventh at even-par 144. Olankitkunchai, who had opened with a 3-under 69, fell back a little with a 75.

   Mercer’s Lauren Lightfritz, a sophomore from Suwanee, Ga., was the third player to equal the low round of the day with her 3-under 69 as she improved six shots from her opening-round 75 to move into the tie for seventh.

   Rounding out the trio at even-par 144 was Oklahoma’s Valerie Tanguay, a senior from Canada who is competing as an individual. Tanguay added a 1-under 71 to her opening-round 73.

   The best score the Penn State contingent could muster were a pair of 3-over 75s posted by sophomore Madelein Herr, the 2015 District One Class AAA champion as a senior at Council Rock North, and junior Lauren Waller, the 2014 PIAA Class AAA runnerup as a senior at Canon-McMillan.

   It was the second straight 75 for Herr, leaving her tied for 28^th at 6-over 150. Waller, who opened with a 76, is another shot behind Herr in a tie for 35^th at 151.

   Junior Jackie Rogowicz, a two-time District One champion at Pennsbury, is tied for 51^st at 155 after adding an 80 to her opening-round 75. Junior Cara Basso, the 2012 PIAA Class AA champion as a sophomore at Villa Maria Academy, is another shot back in a tie for 57^th at 156. Basso had opened with a solid 2-over 74, but struggled home with an 82 in Tuesday’s second round.

   Sophomore Megan McLean, a product of Voorhees High, posted the Lions’ third-best score of the day, a 5-over 77, and is tied for 63^rd at 158. McLean opened with an 81.

   Ariana Coyle Diez, a senior from Ireland, is competing as an individual and making a pretty solid push for inclusion in the starting lineup. She carded a second straight 77 for a 154 total that left her in a group tied for 44^th.
