Buonocore leads Haverford School to sweep of mini-tournament at Waynesborough

Haverford School, behind senior co-captain Cal Buonocore’s even-par 35, picked up its second straight mini-tournament win Tuesday at Waynesborough Country Club to take over sole possession of first place in the Inter-Ac League race.
Haverford School posted a 221 total to win Inter-Ac Invitational No. 3, hosted by Malvern Prep. Defending league champion Episcopal Academy was eight shots behind the Fords in second with a 229 total, Penn Charter was third at 234, Malvern Prep was a shot behind the Quakers in fourth at 235, Germantown Academy was fifth at 261 and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was sixth at 290.
The second straight mini-tournament sweep leaves Haverford School atop the league standings at 13-2. Penn Charter is second at 11-4, Episcopal is third at 10-5 and Malvern Prep is fourth at 8-7.
Episcopal was led by senior co-captain Cole Kemmerer, who joined Buonocore and Penn Charter freshman Patrick Isztwan as co-medalists at even-par 35. Kemmerer is a member at Waynesborough, so he was in familiar territory.
Isztwan was the medalist by himself with a sparkling 3-under 33 in last week’s mini-tournament hosted by Springside Chestnut Hill at Sunnybrook Golf Club.
Malvern Prep senior Matt Davis retained the top spot in the individual standings based on the results from the mini-tournaments with a 130-6-5 mark. Haverford School junior A.J. Aivazoglou is second at 118-6-7 with Patrick Isztwan close behind in third at 118-17-6. Patrick Isztwan’s older brother Brian, a senior at Penn Charter, is fourth at 116-14-11, and Haverford School junior David Hurly is fifth at 112-22-7.
In between Inter-Ac mini-tournaments, Malvern Prep squared off against Catholic League powers La Salle and St. Joseph’s Prep.
With Davis nursing a nagging injury last Wednesday, the Friars dropped a 240-245 decision to La Salle at the Explorers’ home course, Whitemarsh Valley Country Club. Malvern Prep was led by junior Kevin Hagan, who carded a 1-over 37.
Monday, Davis carded a 1-under 35 at another of the Friars’ homes, Applebrook Golf Club, as Malvern Prep edge St. Joseph’s Prep, 232-235.
