Not even the hardy members of the Philadelphia Section PGA’s
Junior Tour were up for challenging Saturday’s miserable weather, so the event
scheduled for 36 holes at Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown, Del. turned into
a one-day Mother’s Day shootout Sunday.
Alex VanScoy of Newark, Del. fired a 2-under 69 over the
6,286-yard, par-71 Back Creek layout to top the 16-to-18 division. VanScoy had
four birdies in collecting his first Junior Tour victory.
Garrett Engle of Harrisburg was the runnerup with a 73 with
Logan Hess of Willow Street another shot back in third with a 74. Frankie
Markiewicz of Middletown, Del. and Thomas Butler of Telford shared fourth
place, each carding a 75.
Alec Ryden of Moorestown, N.J. finished sixth with a 77,
Alex Mulrooney of Wilmington, Del. was seventh with a 78 and Trent Golden of
Enola and Connor Boham of Collegeville, a member of Spring-Ford’s District One
Class AAA championship team last fall, finished in a tie for eighth at 79.
PIAA Class AAA Championship qualifier Caleb Ryan, a
sophomore at Norristown, William Blatchford of Malvern and T.J. Prushinski of
Bear, Del. rounded out the top 10 as they finished tied for 10th at
80.
Morgan Lofland of Paoli was an impressive winner of the
13-to-15 division with an even-par 71 that included birdies at the fifth, sixth
and 12th holes at Back Creek. There was overall scoring for boys
from 13 to 18 and Lofland’s even-par total left him second overall to only
16-to-18 winner VanScoy.
Joseph Morganti of Havertown, Matthew Lafond of Blue Bell
and Logan Paczewski of Dallas shared runnerup honors in the division, each
carding a 4-over 75.
It was another three-way tie for fifth among Stephen Lorenzo
of Lower Gwynedd, Jacob Sokalsky of Garnet Valley and Ryan D’Ariano of West
Chester as they all came in at 76.
Joshua Ryan of Norristown finished alone in eighth place
with a 77 that gave him low-Ryan honors as he was three shots better than big
brother Caleb. Franklin Zhu of Warren, N.J. finished ninth with a 79 and Roy
Anderson of Chadds Ford rounded out the top 10 with an 81.
As a Back Creek member, Haley Quickel used her home-course
advantage to card a 5-over 76 and capture top honors in the girls 16-to-18
division. Quickel had two birdies. She was the only 16-to-18 competitor in the
field, but, like the boys, there was 13-to-18 scoring for the girls and Quickel
was the overall winner.
Charlotte Scully of Chadds Ford had her low Junior Tour
round in carding an 84 that gave her the victory in the 13-to-15 division. Lily
Yang of West Chester was the runnerup with a 90.
Among the nine-holers, Benjamin Saggers of West Chester
bested the field with a 4-over 39 that included a birdie at the first hole.
Jeffrey Homer of Wilmington, Del. was the runnerup with a 40.
Looks like Jeffrey was the low Homer of three as Matthew
Homer finished third with a 42 and Jason “Jack” Homer finished 10th
with a 53.
Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth Beach, Del. finished fourth
with a 43, Harry Stone of Kennett Square took fifth with a 44, Nicholas Joyce
of Quakertown was sixth with a 48 and Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood and Julien de
Brechard of Brooklyn, N.Y. finished tied for seventh at 50.
Rachel Joyce of Quakertown, likely the little sister of
Nicholas, finished ninth with a 51, which is a pretty good score for a
youngster listed as Class of 2026. She was followed by the third of the Homers
of Wilmington, Jason “Jack” with his 53, and Benjamin Cottone of Wayne finished
11th with a 59.
There was also a collegiate division for men ages 17 to 24.
Joshua Sheehan of Abington was the lone competitor in the division, but he put
up a strong 3-over 74 that included two birdies.
