Penn State in second at Kingsmill Intercollegiate behind Dornes

   Penn State, coming off a victory in the Seminole Intercollegiate that improved its ranking in the  Golfstat ratings from 56^th to 47^th, carded a 3-over 283 Sunday in the opening round to stand in second place in the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on the River Course at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.

   The Penn State website hinted at some snow delaying the start of play in Williamsburg, but once things warmed up No. 78 Louisville, led by individual co-leaders Nicolas Piatret and Keegan de Lange, grabbed the lead with an even-par 280.

   Piatret, a junior from France, and de Lange, a sophomore from South Africa, each carded a 2-under 68 over the 6,778-yard, par-70 River Course to share the top spot in the individual chase and lead the way for the Cardinals.

   No. 65 Tennessee is in third place at 286, three shots behind Penn State, No. 123 Sam Houston State is fourth at 290 and No. 187 Marshall is fifth at 294. Temple is in 10th place in the 22-team field with an opening-round 303.

   Penn State was led by sophomore Ryan Dornes, a former Manheim Township standout who carded a 1-under 69 and is in a three-way tie for third, a shot back of Piatret and de Lange.

Junior Cole Miller, who starred scholastically at Northwestern Lehigh, is tied for sixth after an even-par 70. Miller, the reigning Pennsylvania Amateur champion, is coming off his first collegiate individual title at the Seminole. 

   Christian Elliott, a senior from Canada, is also in the top 10 as his 1-over 71 left him in a tie for ninth. Ryan Davis, a freshman from Berkely Heights, N.J., is tied for 17^th after a 3-over 73 and Charles Huntzinger, a sophomore from Duluth, Ga., struggled a little with a 78 that left him tied for 75^th.

   Temple was led by Trey Wren, a sophomore from Suffolk, Va. who joined Penn State’s Davis in the group tied for 17^th at 3-over 73. John Barone, a redshirt sophomore from Dunmore, is tied for 36^th after posting a 75.

   Junior Mark Farley, a former Calvary Christian standout, came in with a 77 for the Owls, freshman Marty McGuckin, who claimed the Inter-Ac League title as a senior at Malvern Prep, posted a 78 and redshirt freshman Erik Reisner, a two-time Central League champion at Harriton, carded an 80.
