Madsen leads Georgetown to runnerup finish at Four Streams

   Georgetown’s Sam Madsen, a junior from Madison, Wis., had the day’s best round, a 5-under-par 66 Tuesday at The Players Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. to help the Hoyas hold on for a runnerup finish in their Georgetown Intercollegiate.

   Madsen was unable to overtake Notre Dame’s Ben Albin, a sophomore from Sante Fe, N.M., for the individual title. Albin added a 3-under 68 over the 7,129, par-71 Four Streams layout to rounds of 66 and 68 he shot in Monday’s double round to take the individual title at 11-under 202.

   Madsen had rounds of 71 and 67 Monday and his sizzling 66 gave him a 9-under 204 total and a solid hold on second place, two shots back of Albin.

   Albin led the Fighting Irish to a convincing win in the team chase as they carded a final round of 2-over 286 for a 6-under 846 total. Georgetown, the reigning Big East champion, had a final-round 294 and finished 12 shots back of Notre Dame at 6-over 858.

   Rhode Island had the day’s best round, a 3-under 281, to finish in a tie for third with DePaul, which carded an even-par 284, at 9-over 861. Eastern Michigan, with a final-round 295, took fifth at 10-over 866.

   Temple, with a solid final round of 5-over 289, moved into sixth place at 870. Princeton, with a final-round 295, was another two shots back in seventh at 872. Saint Joseph’s had a final-round 298 and finished last in the 12-team field at 919.

   In addition to Madsen, Georgetown’s team scorers included Andrew Rudy, a senior from San Diego who finished in a tie for 18^th at 218, junior Cole Berman, a two-time Inter-Ac League champion at Haverford School who finished in a tie for 21^st at 219, Jack Musgrave, a junior from Chesterton, Ind. who finished in a tie for 28^th at 221, and Hardin Councill, a freshman from High Point, N.C. who finished in a tie for 48^th at 228.

   In Tuesday’s final round, Rudy had a 74, Musgrave a 76 and Berman a 78 and the Hoyas were able to toss an 80 from Councill, although the freshman had a solid first day with rounds of 73 and 75.

   Georgetown got several nice performances from its individual entries, led by Austin Rendell, a senior from Winnetka, Ill. Rendell carded an even-par 71 and finished alone in 10^th place at 1-under 212. Anthony Perrino, a sophomore from Concord, N.C., had a final-round 78 and finished in a tie for 32^nd at 222, Patrick DiPasquale had a final-round 79 to finish in a tie for 35^th and Kevin Jackson, a sophomore from Atlanta, had a final-round 74 to finish in 44^th at 226.

   Berman ran into his Inter-Ac rival from Malvern Prep, Michael Davis, a junior at Princeton, and Davis got the best of Berman this time with a final round of even-par 71 to finish two shots better than Berman at 4-over 217. Berman defeated Davis in the 2015 BMW Philadelphia Amateur final at Llanerch Country Club.

   Temple’s Trey Wren, a sophomore from Suffolk, Va., finished off a strong performance with a 1-under 70 that enabled him to finish fourth in the individual standings at 4-under 209.

   Also for the Owls, Mark Farley, a junior out of Calvary Christian Academy, had a 74 to finish in a tie for 21^st at 219, redshirt freshman Erik Reisner, a two-time Central League champion at Harriton, had a 72 to finish in a tie for 32^nd at 222, sophomore Sam Soeth, the former Marple Newtown standout, had a 78 to finish in a tie for 40^th at 225 and John Barone, a redshirt sophomore from Dunmore, had a 73 to finish in a tie for 50^th at 229.

   In addition to Albin's winning performance, Notre Dame got another top-10 showing from Blake Barens, a senior from Villa Park, Calif. who had a final-round 71 to finish in a five-way tie for fifth at 2-under 211.

   Rhode Island had a pair of top-10 finishes, led by Billy Walthouse, a senior from Longmeadow, Mass. who had a final-round 71 to finish alone in third place at 6-under 207. Graduate student Chris Houston, a member of Penn State’s NCAA regional qualifying squad last spring, fired a 3-under 68 for the Rams to climb into the tie for fifth at 2-under 211.

   Eastern Michigan accounted for two of the five players in that logjam at 211, Kyle Rodes, a senior from Plymouth, Mich. who had a final-round 72, and Nic Ross, a junior from Canada who had a final-round 72.

   The last member of that fivesome at 2-under was DePaul’s Jonathan Hewett, a senior from England who matched par in the final round with a 71.

   Saint Joseph’s was led by Michael O’Brien, a freshman from West Chester, Ohio who had a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for 45^th at 227. Ross Pilliod, a sophomore out of Berks Catholic and an occasional Stonewall caddy this summer, rebounded from a disappointing first day with a 1-under 70 to climb into a tie for 54^th at 231.
