Banfe battles to Junior Tour win at a tough Woodcrest



   Peter Banfe of Moorestown, N.J. had the day’s best score, a 9-over-par 80, to capture top honors in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Sunday at the William Flynn-designed Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill, N.J.
   Banfe got it going in the middle of his round at the 6,332-yard, par-71 Woodcrest layout, rattling off seven straight pars from eight through 14. Runnerup David Fitzgerald Jr. of Bryn Mawr was four shots back of Banfe with an 84. The Graham Company is the title sponsor of the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour.
   Darren Nolan of Glenside and Jack Cooley of Chadds Ford shared third place, each carding an 88. Kevin Motil of Sewell, N.J. took fifth with a 91, Hayden Greer of Moorestown, N.J. was sixth with a 93, Jake Millan of Springbrook was seventh with a 95, Stephen Cain of Yardley was eighth with a 102 and Nicholas van der Schaar of Princeton, N.J. was ninth with a 118.
   Frankie Markiewicz of Middletown, Del. carded an 82 to capture the 16-to-18 division for his first Junior Tour victory. Jonathan Green of Lafayette Hill was the runnerup with an 86.
   Edward Gallagher II of Franklinville, N.J. finished third with an 89, John Meany of Colts Neck, N.J. and Andrew Koh of Dresher shared fourth place at 90, Casey Carson of Wenonah, N.J. was sixth with a 91 and Logan Hess of Willow Street was seventh with a 92.
   Dylan Topaz of Fort Washington placed eighth with a 93, Alex Mayernik of Columbus, N.J. was ninth with a 97 and Joe Polidoro of Glassboro, N.J. and Harrison Graham of Wenonah, N.J. rounded out the top 10 as they finished in a tie for 10th, each posting a 98.
   April Xu of Southampton was the only entrant in the girls’ 16-to-18 division and claimed the win with a 102. Xu picked up a birdie at the par-5 second hole.
   Kara Kniezewski of Blue Bell came on strong with a 44 on the back nine and her 92 gave her top honors in the 13-to-15 division. Christine Carroll of Bear, Del. was the runnerup with a 95 and Olivia Strigh of Hammonton, N.J. took third with a 108.
   Hunter Probst of Bear Creek won a scorecard playoff with Henry Stone of Kennett Square after both posted a 46 to best the field of nine-holers. Probst’s par on the sixth hole proved decisive in the match of cards.
   Benjamin Saggers of West Chester finished third with a 47, Zachary Sandler of Gladwyne was fourth with a 54 and Luca Gherardi of Hammonton, N.J. was fifth with 57. Samuel Mento of Hammonton, N.J. and Megan Adelman of Bryn Mawr finished in a tie for sixth, each recording a 62, and Jamie Ciesielka of Woolwich Township, N.J. was eighth with a 68.
