R.B. Diorio Jr. of The Springhaven Club had a front nine to
remember at Old York Country Club in Chesterfield, N.J. Tuesday and it
translated into a Golf Association of Philadelphia title in the Warner (Net).
The 59-year-old Diorio had three natural birdies on the
front nine of the 5,750-yard, par-71 Old York layout and it helped him record a
net 5-under 66 and gave him a two-shot margin of victory over younger brother
Dwight of Rolling Green Golf Club.
R.B. Diorio birdied the second, fifth and sixth holes in a
gross 1-under outward nine that was a net 8-under total. He cooled off on the
back nine, but still finished two shots clear of 55-year-old Dwight Diorio, who
had a net 3-under 68.
“For years I had the upper hand, now he’s the better
player,” R.B. Diorio told the GAP website concerning his sibling rivalry with
younger brother Dwight. “He hits the ball far and the older I get, I’m happy to
just get the ball straight and in the fairway.”
James Barron of Hartefeld National Golf Club and Aaron
Rosenzweig of RiverCrest Country Club shared third place, each carding a net
70.
Defending champion William McCabe of McCall Golf &
Country Club headed a group of four players tied for fourth at even-par 71. He
was joined at that figure by Richard Turner of Llanerch Country Club, Steve
Backstrom of Little Mill Country Club and George Marshalek of Coatesville
Country Club.
Fred Ott of Little Mill, Martin DeLuca of Penn Oaks Golf
Club and Julian Sur of Waynesborough Country Club finished in a tie for ninth
at 1-over 72.
The group tied for 12th at 2-over 73 includes
John Martinson of Saucon Valley Country Club, William Erskine of the
Philadelphia Publinks Golf Association, Francis Tan of Medford Lakes Country
Club and Rick Rutter of Manufacturers Golf & Country Club.
