Quinn gets hot to lead team to Pro-Am win at Hershey East

   With Links Golf Club pro Dave Quinn leading the way with 10 birdies on his own ball, his team rolled to the victory in the net division of the third and final National Car Rental Pro-Am on the Philadelphia Section PGA calendar Thursday at Hershey Country Club’s East Course.

   Quinn finished with an 8-under 63 on his ball as he teamed with Ed Quinn, Jim Balfour and Gary Schumacher for a 19-under 52 in the best-ball-of-foursome format. The amateurs are senior players age 50 and older.

   Lookaway Golf Club pro Mike Little teamed with Roc Irey, Craig Berube and Bob Majczan to win the gross division with an 8-under 63. Little and Irey each had four birdies on their scorecards. And I’m guessing that is the Craig Berube. The former Flyers coach, who is coaching the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, turned 50 late last year.

   Also on the Philadelphia Section PGA front, I wanted to play catch-up on the National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship, which was held Aug. 1 at Concord Country Club in Concordville.

   Philadelphia Cricket Club assistant pro Tony Perla added a 3-under-par 68 to an opening-round 67 to capture the title with a 7-under 135 total.

   He finished a shot ahead of Gulph Mills Golf Club assistant pro Jordan Gibbs.

Perla and Gibbs will represent the Philadelphia Section at the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship Oct. 27 to 30 at the PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

   “I hit a lot of good shots in the afternoon, giving myself a number of good chances, which helped me get comfortable,” Perla told the Philadelphia Section PGA website about his winning effort. “I’m excited to go down to the championship and represent the Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Philadelphia PGA. I have some history down there, so hopefully I can parlay that into some good golf.”

   Gibbs also will be in familiar surroundings in Port St. Lucie.

   “I’m excited to have qualified since I just missed out in last year’s championship,” Gibbs told the Philadelphia Section PGA website. “I’m hoping to have a little home-course advantage when I go down there since I’ve worked there in the past.”
