Brett McGrath, an eighth-grader at the Bryn Athyn Church School,
dominated the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Junior-Junior Championship
from start to finish this week at the Moorestown Field Club, becoming the first
Huntingdon Valley Country Club member in the 68-year history of the event to
claim the title.
McGrath capped his run to the title with a 7 and 5 victory
over Roy Anderson of Kennett Square Golf & Country Club in Wednesday’s
18-hole final over the 5,582-yard, par-72 Moorestown Field Club layout.
McGrath, with older brother Conor on the bag, won the first three holes and
never looked back in defeating Anderson, an eighth-grader at the Charles F.
Patton Middle School.
McGrath opened the week by capturing medalist honors in
qualifying Monday with an even-par 36, two shots better than Chester Valley
Golf Club’s Henry Fish.
McGrath then opened match play with a 4 and 3 victory over
Andrew Lauerman of Talamore Country Club while Anderson needed 10 holes to
outlast Matthew Normand of Riverton Country Club.
In Tuesday’s quarterfinals, McGrath claimed a 4 and 3 win
over Jake Maddaloni of Aronimink Golf Club while Anderson edged Huntingdon
Valley’s Patrick Isztwan, an eighth-grader at Penn Charter, 1-up.
The title match was set up when McGrath edged Louis John
Giovi of Mercer Oaks Golf Club in 10 holes and Anderson downed Darren Nolan of
Talamore, 2-up, in the semifinals.
In the first flight final Wednesday, Matthew Macbride of
host Moorestown Field Club defeated Andrew Damico of McCall Golf & Country
Club, 2-up.
Macbride earned his trip to the final with a 1-up victory
over Kevin Lafond of Blue Bell Country Club while Damico knocked off Jack Davis
of Aronimink, 2 and 1, in the other semifinal.
