Vance grabs match-play berth at U.S. Junior Amateur

Methacton senior Kyle Vance, a two-time District One Class AAA winner, qualified for match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. Tuesday.
Vance added a 3-over 75 to his opening-round 73 over the 7,236-yard, par-72 Honors Course layout for a 4-over 148 total that left him tied for 36th. Match play gets under way Wednesday following a playoff in which 13 players will be vying for the last seven spots in match play after they finished tied at 7-over 151.
Travis Vick of Houston was the qualifying medalist as he added an even-par 72 to the sparkling 64 he shot in the opening round for an 8-under 136 total.
The two other players who qualified for the Junior Amateur along with Vance out of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club failed to make match play. Jacob Hanzel of Sewell, N.J. bounced back from an opening-round 80 with a 1-over 73 Tuesday for a 153 total. Austin Barbin of Elkton, Md. carded an 84 Tuesday after an opening-round 76 for a 160 total.
Meghan Fahey, representing Merion Golf Club and Overbrook Golf Club, came up short of a berth in match play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
Fahey, the Inter-Ac League champion, added an 80 Tuesday to her opening-round 79 over the 6,406, par-73 composite layout at Ridgewood for a 13-over 159 total. The cutoff for match play came at 156 with four players vying for the final spot in a playoff.
Fahey’s round Tuesday got off to a promising start with birdies at the first two holes, but she had three bogeys and three double bogeys the rest of the way. Fahey helped the Academy of Notre Dame win its eighth straight Inter-Ac title this spring, but will begin her junior year at Agnes Irwin later this summer.
South Korea's Hye-Jin Choi, the low amateur at the U.S. Women’s Open at CordeValle, shared medalist honors with Sadie Englemann of Austin, Texas at 3-under 141.
Three of the other four players who qualified for the Junior Girls along with Fahey at Silver Creek Country Club advanced to match play.
Elizabeth Wang of San Marino, Calif. bounced back from an opening-round 79 with a 1-under 72 to finish tied for 27th at 5-over 151. Kyra Cox of South Salem, N.Y. added a 79 to her opening-round 75 to finish tied for 48th at 154. Valery Plata of Colombia carded a 76 after opening with a 79 to finish tied for 56th for a 155 total.
The last of those four, Youngin Chun of Cedar Park, Texas finished at 10-over 156 and was eliminated in the four-for-one playoff for the final berth in match play. Chun, who had opened with a 76, had an 80 Tuesday.
