Jake Calamaro, who helped Radnor capture District One and
PIAA Class AAA team titles as a freshman last fall, fired a 1-under par 69 to
win the 16-to-18 division at a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at
Pennsauken Country Club in Pennsauken, N.J. Tuesday and headed a list of 25
players who earned spots in next week’s Junior PGA Championship qualifier.
It’s been a big couple of weeks for Radnor High sophomores
as Calamaro’s teammate, David Colleran Jr., captured the Golf Association of
Philadelphia Junior Boys’ Championship last week. Colleran was also in the
field at Pennsauken and earned a spot in Monday’s Junior PGA Championship
qualifier with a 78. The qualifier for the boys 13-to-18 division will be held
at Whitford Country Club and the girls and the nine-holers will tee it up at
LuLu Country Club.
Calamaro, a Newtown Square resident who plays out of Rolling
Green Golf Club, had two birdies on the front nine in fashioning his sub-par
round over the 6,213-yard, par-70 Pennsauken Country Club layout. Noah Schwartz
of Cherry Hill, N.J. finished a strong second in the 16-to-18 division,
matching par with a 70.
Liam Ward of Malvern and Jack Melville of Maple Glen
finished tied for third, each carding a 71. Kyle Quagliero of Medford, N.J. and
Buddy Hansen IV of Blue Bell shared fifth place at 74. Ron Robinson, Jr. of
Hatfield and Zachary Barbin of Elkton, Md. were another shot back in a tie for
seventh with 75s.
Jake McCloskey of West Chester and Conor McGrath of
Huntingdon Valley finished tied for ninth, each posting a 76, and David Kim of
Dresher and William Mitchell of Moorestown, N.J. were another shot back in a
tie for 11th at 77.
Three players – Luca Jezzeny of Furlong, Jacob Hanzel of
Sewell, N.J. and Christopher Warner of Medford, N.J. – finished in a tie for 13th
at 78. Chase Armor of Limerick and Reed Winkler of Wilmington, Del. finished in
a tie for 16th, their 79s making the cut on the number for the
Junior PGA Championship qualifier.
Stephen Lorenzo of Lower Gwynedd won the 13-to-15 division
in a match of cards after his 2-over 72 was equaled by A.J. Aivazoglou of Glen
Mills. Lorenzo’s round featured a pair of birdies, one on each nine at
Pennsauken. Aivazoglou’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 eighth
hole.
Akhil Giri of Moorestown, N.J. and Richard Kline III of
Kennett Square finished in a tie for third, each carding a 74. Austin Barbin of
Elkton, Md. finished fifth with a 77.
Colleran, who plays out of Overbrook Golf Club, finished sixth with a 78.
Davis Flannery of Wayne and Malvern Prep sophomore Andrew
Curran, a Media resident and also an Overbrook member, finished tied for
seventh at 79, grabbing the last two spots for the Junior PGA Championship
qualifier.
Strath Haven freshman Kevin Smith of Wallingford finished
ninth in the 13-to-15 division, although he just missed earning a ticket to
Whitford with an 81.
Elise Glauser of Newark, Del. won the girls 16-to-18
division with a 103 and Kate Lupica of Newtown was the runnerup with a 120.
Elizabeth Beek of Blue Bell captured the 13-to-15 division
in a tight battle as her 77 was one shot better than the 78 posted by Maya
Torpey of Malvern.
Sunshine Gu of Yardley finished third with an 84, Kristina
Mueller of Holland took fourth with a 95, Olivia Strigh of Hammonton, N.J. was
fifth with a 96 and Eden Richmond placed sixth with a 97. Kathleen Mark of
Media finished seventh with a 104, Carolyn Mueller of Holland took eighth with
a 111, Ashley Ea of Perkasie was ninth with a 118 and Lauren Borda of Yardley rounded
out the top 10 with a 119.
Among the nine-holers, Win Thomas of Coatesville claimed his
fourth win of the season by firing a 2-over 37. Thomas, who birdied the par-5
14th hole, also earned a trip to the Junior PGA Championship
qualifier at LuLu Country Club.
Evan Barbin of Elkton, Md. finished second with a 38 and
Jack Davis of Newtown Square took third with a 42.
