Detweilers team up to take Father & Son title at Spring-Ford

   With Brandon Detweiler’s newly minted status as a reinstated amateur in place, he joined forces with dad Marlin to capture the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Father & Son (Middle) Championship Thursday at Spring-Ford Country Club.

   The Lancaster Country Club pair matched par with a 72 in the select-drive/alternate-shot format over the 6,419-yard, par-72 Spring-Ford layout to claim a one-shot victory. The Father & Son (Middle) is for sons ages 18 to 29.

   Brandon Detweiler tried a couple of mini-tours following his graduation from North Carolina State, but a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease in 2012 ended his professional ambitions.

   “It is a lot of fun to be able to play in events with my dad again,” Brandon Detweiler told the GAP website. “That was one of the many things that I missed playing professionally. There aren’t a lot of chances for father-and-son stuff and even when I was back in town, I wasn’t allowed to play in these.”

   Team Detweiler offset three bogeys with three birdies and Brandon Detweiler rolled in a testy four-footer to save par at the par-5 18^th hole.

   As it turned out, that par save preserved their one-shot margin of victory over Mark Farley and Thomas Farley of LuLu Country Club, who finished second with a 1-over 73.

   Trey Croney, the former Episcopal Academy standout out of Overbrook Golf Club, and Ken Croney Jr. of Applebrook Golf Club finished third with a 74.

   Six teams ended up in a tie for fourth at 3-over 75. They were: Chris Ellinger of Downingtown Country Club and Mark Ellinger of Whitford Country Club; Dwight Dudas and Matt Dudas of Indian Valley Country Club; Christopher Moran and Michael Moran of Overbrook Golf Club; Greg Smith and Matt Smith of Wilmington Country Club; Jef Fogel and Ryan Fogel of Penn Oaks Golf Club; and Brian Rothaus of Five Ponds Golf Club and Zachary Rothaus of Philmont Country Club.

   The Ridge at Back Brook pair of Brad Ebersole and Steve Ebersole shared 10^th place with Craig Kliewer of Honeybrook Golf Club and Alan Kliewer of Meadia Heights Golf Club at 4-over 76.

   Five more teams finished tied for 12^th at 5-over 77. They were: Matthew Bastian and Matthew Bastian Jr. of Rolling Green Golf Club; A.J. Donatoni of Fox Hill Country Club and Don Donatoni, GAP’s top super senior out of White Manor Country Club; David D’Agostino and Mark D’Agostino of Aronimink Golf Club; Geoffrey Rice and Kevin Rice of Applecross Country Club; and Jack Gregor and Michael Gregor of Huntingdon Valley Country Club.
