Lazor grabs title, leads Dartmouth to third at Yale Invitational

   Dartmouth’s John Lazor, a freshman from Westwood, Mass., captured individual honors and helped the Big Green finish third in the team standings in The Yale Spring Invitational played at The Course at Yale Saturday.

   With the weather finally breaking, the 13-team field played 36 holes in the one-day event and Lazor had rounds of 73 and 70 over the 6,810-yard, par-70 Yale layout to finish at 3-over 143, three shots clear of the field.

   Apparently, someone at Yale was embarrassed that the Yale “B” team had the best team score with rounds of 303 and 291 for a 594 total, so runnerup Bucknell was crowned the “official” winner with rounds of 295 and 300 and a 595 total. I’m going to go old-school here, though, and award the title to the team that had the fewest strokes, which is the Yale “B” team.

   With the Ivy League Tournament coming up this weekend, I’m sure some of the B-teamers were making a case for inclusion on the team playing in the league championship. Consider that goal accomplished. As it was, the two Yale teams consisted of just four players each, so there was no margin of error that the usual fifth man provides for either of the Bulldogs’ entrants.

   The B-teamers were led by Joe Willis, a senior from Lake Forest, Ill. who finished tied for second behind Lazor at 6-over 146, and Henry Cassriel, a sophomore from Orinda, Calif. who finished alone in fourth place at 147. Willis matched par in the second round with a 70 after an opening-round 76 and Cassriel had rounds of 73 and 74.

   Sharing second with Willis was Bucknell’s John Edler, a junior from Fair Haven, N.J. who had rounds of 75 and 71.

   Dartmouth had a pair of 298s to finish third at 596, a shot behind Bucknell and one shot ahead of Yale’s “A” team, which finished fourth with rounds of 299 and 298 and a 597 total.

   Charles Cai, a senior from West Windsor, N.J., got a top-10 finish for Dartmouth with rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149 total that left him in a tie for ninth.

   Dartmouth’s Inter-Ac League connection, juniors Scott Jaster, the former Haverford School standout, and Sean Fahey, who starred at Episcopal Academy, landed on the same number in a tie for 22^nd at 152. Jaster fashioned a pair of 76s while Fahey went 75 and 77.

   Villanova also teed it up at Yale, finishing seventh with rounds of 309 and 308 and a 617 total.

   The Wildcats were led by Luke Waggoner, a senior from Crystal Lake, Ill. who finished in the tie for ninth at 149 with rounds of 72 and 77.

   Also for Villanova, Lucas Trim (78-74), a junior from Tampa, Fla., finished tied for 22^nd at 152, Andrew MacMillan (79-76), a sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished tied for 35^th at 155, Zach Egermayer (80-83), a sophomore from Glen Rock, N.J., finished tied for 58^th at 163 and Will Byne (85-81), a sophomore from Oakmont, finished tied for 65^th at 166.
