Calamaro has a strong showing at the Turtle

   Hoping to make a trip out to Lancaster Country Club Wednesday and assess the state of women’s golf (I don’t think the women’s game has ever been more compelling than it is right now, if you must know) in advance of the U.S. Women’s Open for a story in Thursday’s Daily Times, but there doesn’t seem to be any reason to sit on the latest Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour results, so here we go.

   I’m not certain if Jake Calamaro is following big sister Jackie’s footsteps and going to Radnor, but if he is, he displayed a pretty good handle on the Turtle Creek Golf Club layout that is annually the site of the District One Tournament in an Elite Tour stop at the Turtle that finished up Friday.

   Calamaro had a pair of 75s over the 6,518-yard, par-72 Turtle Creek layout to finish third in the 13-to-15 division. He finished two shots back of Drew Steinmetz of Gilbertsville, who followed up an opening-round of even-par 72 with a 76 for a 4-over 148 total.  Benjamin Pochet (75-74—149) of Royersford finished second.

   This is an educated guess, but a guess nonetheless, but I would not be surprised if Drew Steinmetz is the son of Spring-Ford Country Club head pro Rich Steinmetz, whom I covered as a high school standout at Perkiomen Valley in a previous lifetime at The Mercury in Pottstown.

   D.J. Colleran of Radnor had rounds of 78 and 84 for a 162 total that left him in a tie for 13^th.

   The Elite Tour events also crown an overall 13-to-18 winner and recent Spring-Ford graduate John Foley had rounds of 68 and 74 to claim that title at 2-under 142. Foley was the runnerup in Class AAA in the 2013 District One Tournament at the Turtle, so he knows his way around the layout pretty well.

   Morgan Frazier of Mechanicsburg won the overall girls title with rounds of 72 and 74 and a 146 total. Maddie Sager, a two-time state qualifier at Owen J. Roberts, finished second with a pair of 76s and a 152 total. Theresa Luu of Mullica Hill, N.J. won honors in the 13-to-15 division with rounds of 86 and 80 for a 166 total.
