Kan wins at Butler for first collegiate victory

   Aurora Kan, the 2010 PIAA champion as a senior at Chichester, claimed her first collegiate tournament victory Tuesday as the Purdue junior carded a 2-over 142 total to finish first in the Butler Fall Invitational held at the Highland Country Club.

   Kan’s winning effort also led the Boilermakers to a first-place finish in the team standings with rounds of 296 and 299 for a 595 total that was 28 shots clear of runnerup and tournament host Butler.

   “We’re proud of Aurora and the team,” Purdue assistant coach Caroline Hegg told the Purdue website. “She overcame a tough day with her irons with gritty play and a great putter.”

   Kan was named the Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week Wednesday, the first time the three-time Daily Times Player of the Year has won that award.

   Kan had a pair of 71s over the 6,016-yard, par-70 Highland Country Club layout to finish two shots ahead of teammate Brooke Beegle, a sophomore who was playing in her home town of Indianapolis. Beegle opened with a career-best round of 71 and added a final-round 73.

   Junior Johanna Tillstrom added a 153 (77-78) to finish fifth, her second top-five finish of the young season. Sophomore Vinh-Hoa Ngo finished 10^th with rounds of 79 and 78 for a 157 total and freshman  August Kim bounced back from an opening-round 84 with a 77 to finish in a tie for 21^st at 161.

Dartmouth finishes sixth in Mcdonald Cup

   With Sean Fahey, a freshman out of Episcopal Academy, again coming up with a strong performance, Dartmouth finished sixth Sunday at the Mcdonald Cup, hosted by Yale on its challenging Yale Golf Course.

   Fahey had rounds of 70, 71 and 74 over the 6,789-yard, par-70 Yale Golf Course layout to finish in a tie for 21^st at 5-over 215. He was joined at that figure by another former Inter-Ac League standout  as Brown senior Nelson Hargrove, a Haverford School product, had rounds of 74,71 and 70.

   Jeffrey Lang led the way for the Big Green, opening with a sparkling 68 and following that up with a pair of 71s to finish in a tie for 11^th at even-par 210.

   That helped Dartmouth post rounds of 283, 289 and 291 for an 863 total. The Big Green was two strokes back of fifth-place Hartford and four shots back of fourth-place Rhode Island.

   Charlie Cai carded steady rounds of 71, 72 and 71 to finish a shot ahead of Fahey in a tie for 18^th at 4-over 214 for Dartmouth.

   Fahey gets to come home for the weekend as the Big Green will tee it up at Philmont Country Club’s North Course Saturday and Sunday in the Temple Invitational.
